This is the tie of the round as Lyon host Marseille for a place in the semi-finals of the Coupe de France. The visitors have been in excellent form this season but have not won this competition in over 30 years.

Lyon Preview – Will Lyon put their recent poor run behind them and make home advantage count?

It’s not been the sort of league campaign that Lyon would have wanted or expected but there is still much to be positive about for the club with what’s left of the season. Rudi Garcia’s men are going to struggle qualifying for the Champions League via Ligue 1 following a run of three games without a win to begin February – taking just one point during that time. It leaves them eight points behind third place Rennes and whilst not impossible it’s looking very improbable as things stand.

Despite that, Lyon have Champions League knockout football to look forward to later this month, are in the final of the Coupe de Ligue and have a chance to reach the semi-final of the French Cup when taking on Marseille on Wednesday.

Lyon’s passage to this stage has been one full of goals. Garcia’s men have scored 13 whilst conceding four. This will be the first home game of their cup run having seen off fellow Ligue 1 clubs Nantes and Nice in the most recent rounds.

One man who has certainly enjoyed this competition so far is striker Moussa Dembele. He’s scored in each of the three games and will lead the line again having notched in eight of his last 10 matches in all competitions.

Marseille Preview – Can Marseille extend their excellent league form and reach the last four?

The appointment of Andre Villas-Boas was an exciting one for Marseille supporters but it was also one which brought a certain amount of risk. The Portuguese coach has allayed those concerns as he’s led Marseille to second place, putting eight points between themselves and Rennes in third spot. Barring an extremely unlikely collapse it puts them in a great position for automatically qualifying for next season’s Champions League.

Villa-boas has made this Marseille team very hard to beat losing only three games in the league so far this season. The last of those losses came away to PSG in October.

It’s a cup run which has not been without it’s challenges already as Marseille required penalties to see off fourth tier side Trelissac before comfortably dispatching Granville 3-0 away from home and most recently defeating Strasbourg 3-1 at home.

Despite being one of France’s most successful clubs and having the second highest number of wins in this competition, Marseille have not lifted this trophy since 1989. They will feel that’s long overdue but have a big hurdle to overcome here even to get to the last four.

Lyon vs Marseille Betting Advice

This is easily the most attractive of the four quarter-finals and whoever progresses is likely going to be at worst the second favourites to win the competition. Marseille edged the only league meeting of the season between the two so far when winning 2-1 at home. Lyon had won the last five league meetings before that game, however and have not lost at home to Marseille since 2012.

Key Facts – Lyon vs Marseille Betting Tip

  • Lyon are five-time winners of the French Cup, their last success coming in 2012
  • You have to go all the way back to 1989 for the last time Marseille were successful in this competition
  • There are 16 points between these teams in Ligue 1 and Marseille were 2-1 winners in their last meeting

This is a clash of two different styles with Lyon a much more dynamic team going up against the organisation and resoluteness of Marseille. It’s the visitors who are much more consistent in their level of performance which is why I think they will dictate the tempo of this game to suit their defensive strength.

Seven of their last eight away games have went under 2.5 goals and it’s an outcome I predict happening once again tomorrow.
