Lyon – Depay can steer title challenge back on course?

Having managed four consecutive Ligue 1 victories either side of February, it would be fair to say Les Gones (W17 D9 L3) are wobbling as they peer down the final stretch. The recent 1-1 draw at Reims made it two wins in five league games (D2 L1), barely avoiding a fourth defeat of the season. Memphis Depay weaving his magic in second-half time added on to supply Tino Kadewere for a potential invaluable equaliser.

The Zimbabwean took his tally for the season in Ligue 1 into double figures, joining the other members of the front three: star man Memphis Depay leads the way on 14, two in front of Karl Toko Ekambi. The trio will have to be at their best if Lyon are to make it a swift return to winning ways, as they’ve done on each of the last two occasions they failed to win, and register a fourth win in five (L1) at home in Ligue 1.

Some notable trends. Lyon’s last five Ligue 1 games have seen both teams find the net four times, but only twice in the previous five when hosts. Meanwhile, only three teams – Brest, Lens and Montpellier – have scored more than once at the Groupama Stadium this term, where Rudi Garcia’s men boast the fourth-best home record (W9 D3 L2) and netted at least twice in eight of their past eleven top-flight matches.

Paris Saint-Germain – Mitigating reasons for recent slip up?

PSG (W19 D3 L7) losing 2-1 at home to relegation-threatened Nantes in the previous round of fixtures didn’t really make a whole lot of sense there and then, but then revelations emerged that several players were removed from proceedings due to reports of a break-in at their homes, some with their families present. That bare result, however, meant PSG failed to capitalise on Lille slipping up earlier that same day.

PSG remain prominent in second, three points behind Lille, and bookmakers are still confident the men from Paris will ultimately prevail in the end. Just nine games remain though and costly slip ups like that against lowly Nantes could prove fatal should the others get their acts together. To their credit, they responded in magnificent style in midweek, emphatically dispatched Lille in the cup with a 3-0 win in Paris.

Mauricio Pochettino has now seen his side lose back-to-back home games in Ligue 1. However, his side are chasing a fourth straight away win after triumphing to nil at Bordeaux, Dijon and Marseille since February. The Parisiens have shutout four of their last five opponents on the road – a surprise 3-2 loss at FC Lorient the exception – and boast a near identical record on the road to that of their hosts (W9 D2 L3).

Lyon Vs PSG Betting Advice

Tino Kadewere, scorer of the only goal when these sides met in Paris earlier in the season as Lyon secured their first win in the French capital for eight years, spared the blushes of Lyon last time out as Rudi Garcia’s men salvaged a point at Reims. They would have backed themselves to clinch all three, though. PSG fared even worse, however, surrendering a 1-0 lead to lose 2-1 at the Parce des Prince to lowly Nantes.

Chelsea Vs Bayern Munich – Key Facts:

  • Back in December, Lyon earned a 1-0 win to claim their first Ligue 1 victory over PSG at the Parc des Prince since 2012.
  • Lyon have the edge at home, too, with three wins to the two of PSG in the past five seasons. Four of these encounters produced 2-1 scorelines.
  • Les Gones average more than two goals per home game in Ligue 1, whereas PSG are averaging exactly two per away game across the season. Expect goals, therefore.

Although PSG emerged victorious on each of their recent two visits here, Lyon have held their own with Ligue 1 victories in 2017/18 and 2018/19. The latter have scored in 11 of their last 12 home games, and at least twice in eight of these, so seem certain to test a PSG rearguard that hasn’t conceded in its last three away Ligue 1 contests. The champions tend to score, though, having done so in 12 of the last 13 away from home.
