Preview: French side Lyon require one final push – and some fortunate to fall their way elsewhere – if they are to qualify for the next round. Last up in this group campaign for them is a home clash with RB Leipzig, who are already safely through to the next round.

Lyon Preview – Qualification reliant on bettering Zenit?

Could Lyon (3rd – W2 D1 L2, GF7 GA6) rue one bitterly cold evening in Russia? Qualification was firmly in their hands prior to facing Zenit in St Petersburg two weeks ago, while victory would have secured them a safe passage into the latter stages with a game to spare. So to lose that contest 2-0 – and deservedly so according to Expected Goals (xG: ZEN 0.90 – 0.58 LYO) – was a huge blow to their chances of finishing in the top two.

The situation as it stands now means Rudi Garcia’s inconsistent troops, who have alternated between winning and losing for the last seven competitive matches, must better the result of Zenit, who do face a rather tricky outing in Benfica. The fact their own upcoming opponents, RB Leipzig, are already through could, in theory at least, make this a slightly more easier fixture than it would at first appear; although Lyon should be confident regardless, after beating the same opposition 2-0 in Germany.

Friday night’s rout of Nimes, winning 4-0 on the road while in Ligue 1 action, was the ideal warm up. Particularly as it enabled Memphis Depay, the team’s talisman and leading scorer this season, to bolster his fitness after a recent spell on the sidelines. The mercurial Dutchman netted twice in that aforementioned victory, taking his tally to 13 in 16 appearances in all competitions having also scored 100% of the time (4 games) in which he has featured in this group.

RB Leipzig Preview – Germans keen to top the group?

Drawing at home to Benfica last time out was enough for RB Leipzig (1st – W3 D1 L1, GF8 GA7) to book their place in the next round, which means all that remains for the German club is seeing whether they do so as group winners or runners-up. It will be the former should a defeat be avoided in France against a Lyon team that inflicted their only loss of the group on them back in October, losing what was an open contest 2-0 despite deserving more based on chances created (xG: RBL 1.95 – 1.66 LYO).

In theory then, this should be a much tougher task in the knowledge they have already lost to this very opponent on their own patch. However, Leipzig have so far thrived when playing outside of Germany, winning both away encounters at Benfica (1-2) and Zenit (0-2). They’ve also carried a significant goal threat at all times, scoring exactly two goals on four occasions in this group – the one exception being against Lyon.

In fact, to score only two goals is modest by their usual standards domestically. No team in the German Bundesliga this season – a league they sit second in, six points above Bayern Munich – has found the back of the net with more frequency (39 in 14 games) than the Julian Nagelsmann managed side, whose 3-1 home victory over Hoffenheim on Saturday extended their excellent recent run to seven wins from the last eight matches in all competitions (W7 D1). In that time no less than 30 goals were scored, for the loss of nine at the other end. Scintillating form.

Lyon Vs RB Leipzig Key Facts:

  • Lyon have taken four out of a possible six points from their two group games contested in France, drawing with Zenit (1-1) but beating Benfica (3-1)
  • Away from home in this group, RB Leipzig – who have already qualified – have taken maximum points from visits to Benfica (1-2) and Zenit (0-2).
  • On Matchday 2, these teams carved out plenty of goalscoring opportunities but only one would end up scoring – Lyon snatching a 2-0 victory in Germany.

Betting Summary

Pressure well and truly off for visiting RB Leipzig here, with the Germans guaranteed to finish no lower than second and only having top spot left to fight for. A point or more would secure them that. Their opponents will of course have other ideas, but especially this Lyon side who not only won the reverse fixture 2-0 but desperately need maximum points from this final contest. Even if they win, it may not be enough for them qualify.

All Lyon can do is target the win, which I fully expect them to do with their array of attacking firepower. Having Memphis Depay back is also a huge boost with the Dutchman having scored on all four of his appearances in this competition this season, which includes the opener in Germany. PaddyPower offer 5/1 on Depay First Goalscorer. This won’t be easy for the hosts, though, with Leipzig victorious in Portugal and Russia and renowned for their scoring prowess. Goals are anticipated.
