Lyon – Les Gones’ title tilt wobbling?

At the Stade Velodrome on Sunday, in what was the pick of the weekend’s Ligue 1 action, Lyon (W16 D8 L3) did themselves and this writer a disservice by turning in their most tepid performance in quite some time. Les Gones having departed Marseille with only a share of the spoils following a 1-1 draw, after creating a paltry 0.58 worth of xG – with that their lowest figure since 1 November (1-1 vs Lille away).

Rudi Garcia’s side have now taken four of the last nine points, having followed up a surprising 2-1 loss at home to recently resurgent Montpellier by edging out Stade Brest on the road in a narrow 3-2 success. All of a sudden, keeping pace at the top of Ligue 1 is proving troublesome for the seven-time national champions, who would have moved within a point of leaders Lille with victory over Marseille.

Consequently, Lyon remain three points back from the summit and, more importantly, only one ahead of fourth-place Monaco, as the race for the Champions League spots heats up. However, with Lille set to host Marseille and second-place PSG and Monaco on the road for this midweek round, there is an opportunity for Garcia and his players to consolidate their status among the top-four as hosts to managerless opposition.

Rennes – Favourable fixture to reignite faltering campaign?

Some troubling results eventually took their toll over the weekend as Rennes (W10 D8 L8) manager Julian Stephan – heralded for steering the club into their first Champions League group stage campaign earlier in the season with a third-place finish in 2019/20 – tendered his resignation following a run of one win in nine Ligue 1 games. His assistant, Philippe Bizeul, will assume the reins on an interim basis.

Bizeul faces a baptism of fire inside Groupama Stadium, where Rennes boast a hugely encouraging record of four wins in as many league and cup visits since the start of 2018, but must quickly come to terms with a side six places and 18 points better off in the Ligue 1 table ahead of Wednesday’s evening kick-off. This on top of contending with an alarming dip in form, culminating in the former manager’s job.

Friday’s 2-1 defeat to struggling Nice at Roazhon Park proved the final straw for manager and club hierarchy alike. A third successive loss in the league, having failed to win in six (D2 L4) since registering a 2-1 victory away to Stade Brest on 17 Jan. A lack of goals largely at fault for their demise – Les Rouge et Noir netting three times across this barren sequence. Two coming from their summer signing from Lyon, Martin Terrier.

Lyon Vs Rennes Betting Advice

Depending on how one chooses to view this fixture, a case can be made for either clinching three points. Lyon are undoubtedly the superior side on paper, registering 18 points more at this stage while boasting a formidable attacking trident which has so far combined for the third-most goals (55 from 27 games) in Ligue 1 this term. Rennes, however, have won away to Lyon in all of the past three seasons, all to nil.

Lyon vs Rennes – Key Facts:

  • At Groupama Stadium on Wednesday, Lyon go searching for only their second Ligue 1 win in four (W1 D1 L1 prior) against a Rennes side seeking to avoid a fourth straight defeat.
  • The latter, Rennes, are also winless in their past six Ligue 1 matches (D2 L4), scoring just three goals during this period. Three of Lyon‘s last five home wins were to nil.
  • However, the past three times Lyon hosted Rennes in Ligue 1 resulted in the hosts succumbing to defeat, having lost to nil themselves each time (0-1 in 2019/20).

Another away win to nil seems improbable. Lyon have netted in 23 of their last 24 Ligue 1 matches, only failing to do so in a shock 1-0 loss at home to fifth-place Metz on 17 January. Lyon are wobbling, though, with one win in three (W1 D1 L1). However, Rennes are in disarray at present, losing three on the spin and seeing their manager depart, so I expect the hosts to atone for a disappointing showing in Sunday’s Olympico.
