Preview: The points were evenly shared in the first Derby-Rhone Alps of 2021-22, after a 1-1 draw at St Etienne‘s Stade Geoffroy-Guichard. Neither side has kicked on since then, however, Lyon residing in 11th (W7 D8 L5) as their local rivals occupy last place (W2 D6 L12) ahead of Friday’s meeting at the former’s Groupama Stadium.

Lyon – Inefficient forwards limiting Les Gones potential?

Moussa Dembele’s solitary strike was enough to seal a first Ligue 1 victory since November last time out at Troyes. It was another industrious performance in attack from Les Gones, surpassing 2xGF created for the fourth league game in six. The fact they only won one of these games whilst scoring a meagre six times – and no more than once in five of these fixtures – tells us a clinical edge is missing from their play.

This could be crucial on Friday, in a game they are once again expected to dominate versus the division’s bottom side. However, it should be noted each of their last three Ligue 1 victories were by a single goal and spread across their past ten matches (D4 L3) in the competition. Meanwhile, they haven’t won successive league games since September. Or any of the last three here at Groupama Stadium (D2 L1).

Key Stat: Lyon haven’t found the back of the net more than once in seven of their last eight Ligue 1 matches, averaging exactly one goal per game across these fixtures, last doing so in a 2-2 draw away to second-from-bottom Bordeaux on December 5.

St Etienne – Demotion to Ligue 2 becoming reality?

With every passing week they aren’t picking up points, you sense there is an increasing inevitably about where this season is heading for Les Verts. The club were fortunate to escape the drop in 2019/20, when the curtailed season in France spared them a relegation battle they appeared set to lose. But it seems their luck is finally about to run out, now five points from safety following a sixth successive defeat.

That was at home to an upwardly-mobile Lens pushing for Europe. The only positive takeaway from that game then was the scoreline itself, and that St Etienne managed to contribute towards a 2-1 game. Just a second strike in six Ligue 1 outings for Pascal Dupraz and his flailing charges, who have won two of twenty league contests all season long and just one of nine on the road (D2 L6) – 1-0 vs 17th-placed Troyes.

Key Stat: Only three teams are averaging less xGF across the 2021-22 Ligue 1 season than St-Etienne (1xGF), while only Lorient have fewer goals than the 18 from 20 games of Les Verts who haven’t scored more than one goal on 17 occasions so far.

Lyon Vs St Etienne Betting Advice

Such is the plight of St Etienne right now that many will be expecting a comfortable victory for Lyon at their Groupama Stadium. It could be anything but. For not only are Lyon facing a difficult period of their own, with last week’s slender 1-0 scoreline at Troyes ending a run of four successive Ligue 1 draws but also a five-match winless spell, but their attack continues to underwhelm.

Lyon Vs St Etienne – Key Facts:

  • After a 1-0 win at Troyes in their latest Ligue 1 outing, Lyon – who were previously winless in five (D4 L1) – are seeking successive league victories for only the second time this season.
  • Six consecutive Ligue 1 defeats is what St Etienne are keen on snapping on Friday. Les Verts haven’t scored more than one goal in 17 of 20 league matches this season.
  • Lyon’s last three Ligue 1 victories – and four of seven overall for the season – seen them ahead at the half-time interval before going on to win the contest.

Lyon are unbeaten in four Derby Rhone-Alps clashes, winning three, and while they should extend that streak with a win, it may not be as comprehensive as some believe it will be. Lyon have only won seven times in the league this season; the margin in each of these was never more than two while the last three were exactly one goal. They would also score no more than once in seven of their previous eight league games.
