Preview: The points were evenly shared in the first Derby-Rhone Alps of 2021-22, after a 1-1 draw at St Etienne‘s Stade Geoffroy-Guichard. Key Stat: Lyon haven’t found the back of the net more than once in seven of their last eight Ligue 1 matches, averaging exactly one goal per game across these fixtures, last doing so in a 2-2 draw away to second-from-bottom Bordeaux on December 5.

 

 

St Etienne – Demotion to Ligue 2 becoming reality? 

With every passing week they aren’t picking up points, you sense there is an increasing inevitably about where this season is heading for Les Verts. The club were fortunate to escape the drop in 2019/20, when the curtailed season in France spared them a relegation battle they appeared set to lose. But it seems their luck is finally about to run out, now five points from safety following a sixth successive defeat.

That was at home to an upwardly-mobile Lens pushing for Europe. The only positive takeaway from that game then was the scoreline itself, and that St Etienne managed to contribute towards a 2-1 game. Just a second strike in six Ligue 1 outings for Pascal Dupraz and his flailing charges, who have won two of twenty league contests all season long and just one of nine on the road (D2 L6) – 1-0 vs 17th-placed Troyes.

Key Stat: Only three teams are averaging less xGF across the 2021-22 Ligue 1 season than St-Etienne (1xGF), while only Lorient have fewer goals than the 18 from 20 games of Les Verts who haven’t scored more than one goal on 17 occasions so far.

Such is the plight of St Etienne right now that many will be expecting a comfortable victory for Lyon at their Groupama Stadium. It could be anything but.
