Mallorca Preview – Will an empty San Moix claim another big-name scalp?

The timing of the enforced break was unfortunate for Mallorca (18th – W7 D4 L16), who had entered into some decent form by claiming two wins and seven points from their final four league games. A revival of sorts, especially for a team that were seriously toiling beforehand with one win and seven losses recorded from its previous ten league fixtures. Form good enough to see them climb to within a point of safety.

Survival was always going to be a challenge in their first season back in the top-flight since 2012/13, and, so far at least, they have given themselves every chance of fulfilling their objectives. The concern now, however, is how this team collectively handles playing their remaining matches – in particular, those played at home in Palma – without fans in attendance, which could go some way to negating their best asset.

This season, Mallorca have lent heavily on results at San Moix Stadium, where their record currently stands at W6 D2 L6. Impressive victories over Real Madrid (1-0) and Valencia (4-1), among others, are positive examples of previous bodies of work meanwhile. Indeed, six of their seven wins so far came at home, highlighting just how important their remaining five home fixtures will be if they are to survive.

Barcelona Preview – Can Setien rectify Barca’s away struggles?

Falling short in both clashes with Real Madrid, drawing 0-0 at Camp Nou but crucially losing in Madrid 2-0, could come back to bite Barcelona (1st – W8 D4 L5), who must now protect a two-point lead for dear life in the final eleven games of this drawn out season or risk losing out on a third successive league title on the head-to-head rule. If they are to remain top, a greater level of consistency needs to be found.

Five defeats is already two more than the entirety of the 2018/19 campaign, with all five occurring on the road after losing at the likes of Athletic Bilbao, Granada and Levante. It was a problem which persisted right up until play was suspended in March. A 3-2 victory in Real Betis the only win on the road since December (W1 D2 L2 since), alarmingly conceding two goals in each of the last five said matches.

Somewhat unsurprisingly, Barca rank only fifth when it comes to their away record (W5 D3 L5) in 2019/20 so far. Tricky outings at Sevilla and Villarreal, along with numerous trips to sides battling for every point near the bottom, still await in the closing stretch which could present a problem before the season is out. Fortunately, Saturday’s opponents are usually compliant: victory would mark a seventh consecutive win over Mallorca, scoring five in a 5-2 scoreline at the Camp Nou in December.

Mallorca Vs Barcelona Betting Advice

If recent encounters between the sides can serve us well on Saturday, then Barca should saunter in the Spanish sun to a comfortable three points. The Blaugrana winning each of the last six meetings in La Liga, scoring five when these teams met in the Camp Nou last December. Yet a word of caution: Mallorca reserve their best for home and are unlikely to be overawed after shutting out Real Madrid in a ‘to nil’ victory in October.

Mallorca Vs Barcelona – Key Facts

  • Across the current season in Spain, Mallorca have registered more wins from their 13 home games (6) than Barcelona have so far managed from as many away games (5).
  • Just 36% of Mallorca‘s home matches this season featured three or more goals, with their last three producing exactly one match goal.
  • Barcelona have been at least two goals better than Mallorca in each of the pair’s previous five encounters however, scoring a combined 14 goals across the last three meetings.

The problem, of course, is we simply don’t know how some teams will cope playing behind closed doors. Some rise to the occasion when a vocal support is driving them on, particularly those towards the bottom of the league who rely on the small margins to reduce the gap on the better sides. Barca do tend to dominant their meetings, though, winning the last six by at least a two goal margin.
