Mallorca – Hosts sensing an upset in the Balearics?

With survival the name of the game in Palma this season, Real Mallorca can be more than satisfied with their body of work thus far. Luis Garcia Plaza has overseen just six defeats in eighteen La Liga outings (W4 D8) in 2021-22, ending December five points clear of danger following a run of two defeats in nine. The coach’s task in 2022, though, will be to get this team winning on a more consistent basis.

Since the start of September, Los Pirates have picked up a modest 13 points out of a possible 45 having won just twice during this period. Ironically, though, one of those was against reigning champs Atletico, going to Madrid and winning 2-1. They’re also a tough nut to crack in front of their own fans, with draws against Real Betis, Sevilla and Villarreal contributing to a fine record of W2 D6 L1 at Visit Mallorca Estadi.

Key Stat: Each of the previous four Mallorca home La Liga matches ended in the points being shared, failing to score the last two times versus Getafe and Celta Vigo. Moreover, their total of six home draws in 2021-22 is the joint-most in La Liga.

Barcelona – Xavi upheaval already in motion?

It looks like being a busy month of January in the transfer window as Barca scramble to assemble a team talented enough to avoid the ignominy of missing out on the Champions League places. The Catalan club concluded the first half of the campaign down in seventh, only two points from fourth-place Rayo Vallecano but a staggering 18 adrift of a Real Madrid outfit threatening to make it a procession at the top.

Ferran Torres has already arrived from Man City, and there are strong rumours several more will follow. Unfortunately the Spain international is unlikely to make his debut anytime soon, a foot injury seeing him joining a huge list of absentees that includes Pedri, Gavi, Ousmane Dembele and Memphis Depay among others. Hardly ideal for a team boasting one win from their final four La Liga matches (D2 L1) in 2021.

Key Stat: With one win so far from eight away La Liga games this season, only three teams have produced fewer wins on the road in Spain than Barcelona (W1 D5 L2), who can, however, claim to be unbeaten across the last four such matches (W1 D3).

Mallorca Vs Barcelona Betting Advice

It says a lot about the current state of affairs at Barcelona that they are odds against to earn the victory upon Sunday’s visit to Mallorca. The latter haven’t managed to avoid losing in this fixture, home or away, the last seven times going back to a 1-1 draw at Camp Nou in 2010. In Mallorca, meanwhile, the hosts have lost five successive La Liga meetings since coming from behind to earn a 2-1 win in May 2009.

Mallorca Vs Barcelona – Key Facts:

  • Eight points stand between Barcelona in seventh (W7 D7 L4) and Mallorca in fifteenth (W4 D8 L6). Barca have won the past seven meetings between them, however.
  • Looking at their respective home and away records, though, shows this latest match up should be a much more competitive affair: Mallorca are W2 D6 L1 at home in 2021-22, Barcelona W1 D5 L2 away).
  • Seven of nine Mallorca La Liga home games this term went below the Over 2.5 Goals threshold, as have five of eight Barcelona away league games in 2021-22.

Even at such alluring odds then, the visitors are probably best swerving. Xavi will have to name another makeshift side, similar – and in some cases, a lot worse – than those which combined to produce one win from the last four league games. Moreover, their away record this season remains abysmal, and points to Mallorca, who have lost just once at home all season, securing a rare positive result against the Blaugrana.
