Mallorca Preview – Home form key to survival aspirations?

If any team should have appreciated the recent respite during the winter break, it is Real Mallorca (18th – W4 D3 L12, GF18 GA33). The club were toiling towards the end of last year and have now collected a single point from the last eighteen available to leave them languishing inside the La Liga relegation zone, on account of their inferior goal difference. Now, subsequently recharged, coach Vicente Moreno will bank on his players being quicker out of the blocks for a change on Sunday.

Since last tasting victory in the league, when putting three past Villarreal as hosts in a 3-1 success on 10 November, Mallorca have conceded the game’s opening goal in all six matches. It is therefore little wonder their results nosedived recently, as a team which has so far averaged slightly less than a goal per game (0.95) is going to find it incredibly difficult overcoming any early setbacks. Although they did, however, benefit from striking first in their outstanding 1-0 victory at home to Real Madrid back in October.

Nine of their twelve defeats this season seen them trail at the half-time interval, which includes the result from the reversal of this fixture at Mestalla. A couple of penalties undid for them at the start of September when losing 2-0 to Sunday’s opponents. Mallorca’s previous five La Liga contests have seen a penalty awarded – one for and two against – so Los Barmellones must be wary of falling foul to a similar demise here.

Valencia Preview – Victory would boost top-four hopes?

A slender victory earned over Eibar at the Mestalla last week ensured Valencia (6th – W8 D7 L4, GF29 GA25) made the best possible start to the second half of the season, with summer signing Maxi Gomez scoring the only goal of the game midway through the opening period to take his tally for 2019/20 in La Liga to seven. The Uruguayan is the now the club’s outright leading scorer for the season and will be keen to add to his three away goals on Sunday.

Three points last weekend moved Valencia back into sixth in the table, four points behind the coveted Champions League places. However, with Barcelona coming to town the following matchday, it is crucial Albert Celades and his team put some additional points on the board here in order to ease the burden of pressure ahead of that tricky encounter the following weekend. They can achieve this by getting the better of Mallorca for the second occasion this season.

Los Che needed to grind out the victory when these teams met way back in September, scoring both of their goals in a 2-0 triumph via the penalty spot. Their present form is such, particularly as it contrasts so sharply with that of the opposition, that Valencia are firm favourites to complete a league double over said opponents. A 2-1 loss at Real Betis in mid-November, meanwhile, remains their only La Liga defeat for nine games (W5 D3 L1), negotiating the past five league fixtures without incurring a single loss (W3 D2).

Betting Summary

Every home fixture is critical for Real Mallorca, registering almost the entirety (15) of their 16 points accrued thus far on home turf. Additionally, their record when hosting is a reasonable W4 D2 L4, with an undoubted highlight being the 1-0 success over Real Madrid. Meanwhile Valencia are bubbling along nicely and are currently unbeaten in five in the league (W3 D2), despite netting only once in each of the last three. The vistitors will bring a rather mixed away record in La Liga to the San Moix however, reading W3 D2 L4 in 2019/20.

Mallorca Vs Valencia – Key Facts:

  • Currently without a win in six La Liga games (D1 L5), Mallorca registered 15 of their 16 points this season in home fixtures (W4 D2 L4).
  • Enjoying a five-game unbeaten league run (W3 D2), Valencia would claim maximum points only three times from their opening nine away encounters (W3 D2 L4).
  • In their previous league meeting, at the Mestalla in September, Valencia benefited from the award of two spot-kicks, duly converting both in a 2-0 victory.

Recent form dictates the betting, with Valencia around evens to pick up what would only be a fourth away win of the campaign. Their record away from home appears prime for exploitation then, winning just 33 per cent of the time on their travels. Mallorca are in poor form (D1 L5) and have lost the last two at home, to Betis (1-2) and Sevilla (0-2). However, the team from Palma were slightly unfortunate on both occasions and have managed to avoid defeat more often than not when at home this season.
