Malmo Preview – Can Malmo put home advantage to good use and take command of qualification in this group?

Uwe Rosler’s Malmo had to settle for second best in their domestic championship this season, which came to an end at the beginning of the month. That would have been a major disappointment for the club, especially as they missed out by just a point in the end. It also means they will likely miss it on competing in the Champions League next season unless, of course, they pull off the extraordinary feat of winning this year’s Europa League. That is, of course, very unlikely but Rosler will be looking for his team to make it out the group stage.

Malmo’s have been competitive enough in their first four matches. Since losing 1-0 to this opponent in the opening round of fixtures Rosler’s men have picked up five points from a possible nine. Their only win to date is the 2-1 success at home to Lugano, whom they drew with away in their latest game. Malmo will compete their group stage campaign with a visit to Copenhagen which could prove to be a huge match.

Malmo to win to nil

Dynamo Kyiv Preview – Are Ukrainians set to take a result back home with them that would see them remain in the top two?

In a group where they may have thought their extensive European experience would be telling, Dynamo Kyiv have made pretty hard work of their qualification. The Ukrainians remain unbeaten in Group B but have drawn their last three matches which sees them sitting in second spot by virtual of scoring one less goal than Copenhagen. Dynamo have drawn with that opponent in successive matches, both of which ended 1-1. Despite the section being so close it’s one which Kyiv will be confident of progressing from should they avoid defeat tomorrow. A draw would definitely keep them in the top two before facing Lugano at home on match day six. The Swiss currently sit bottom of the group having taken only two points from four matches.

Although only halfway through their domestic league Dynamo are already 13 points behind Shakthar Donetsk. That gap looks insurmountable so the Europa League becomes becomes even more of a focus for them. They have reached the last-16 in each of the last two seasons and that will likely be their aim once again.

Group B is one of the most competitive in this season’s Europa League and this game looks to be crucial for both clubs and their hopes of qualifying. Malmo will feel they have to get their win with their final game being away from home whilst Dynamo know that a point is a good result for their own chances, whilst a win could see them guarantee their passage as early as Thursday.

Being such a competitive group each of the fixtures have been even affairs and the biggest margin of victory has been by one goal. It’s unlikely to be any different on Thursday with another close match expected. Malmo are traditionally very strong and have lost only one of their last 15 in this competition. It’s also one defeat in their last 27 domestic games. Dynamo do not lose many on their travels but the home side look value to get all three points.
