The big clash in Thursday’s Allsvenskan card sees Malmo – looking to reclaim second spot – host a Hammarby team who have been inconsistent in their start to the season.

Malmo Preview – Will Malmo make it three wins in a row to keep pace with leaders?

Jon Dahl Tomasson arrived at Malmo at the beginning of 2020 and his first experience as coach was losing heavily to Wolfsburg in the last-32 of the Europa League. He’s been made to wait for his first taste of the domestic league but nine game in and he will realise already just how competitive the Allsvenskan is. Malmo come into Thursday’s game in third place behind the early pacesetters Norrkoping and Hacken. A win would take them into second and four points behind the leaders.

Whilst it’s still very early in the season to discuss title challenges, Tomasson will know they cant really afford to be too far of the top.

As tends to be the case Malmo have started the season very strongly at home with three wins and two draws from their first five in the league. They have been more workmanlike than extravagant to date but Malmo are a team who are known for grinding results out even when not at their best.

The absence of Markus Rosenberg in their attack this season was always going to be a felt following the Swedish striker’s retirement. The signing of Isaac Thelin has went some way to replacing him, though, scoring five goals in his first eight games including two in the 2-1 win against Kalmar last time out.

Hammarby Preview – Can Hammarby build on their first away win of the season and move closer to top three?

It was always likely that Hammarby could suffer something of a hangover having narrowly missed out on what would have been just their second ever title. A third place finish just two points behind was as close as they have come in a long time and they are feeling the effects so far in this campaign. There is great symmetry about Hammarby’s record so far this season with three wins, three draws and three defeats thus far.

Another title challenge is looking improbable at the moment but they will want to mount a challenge for the top which would bring with it European football.

It was a very challenging start to the season in terms of away fixtures for Hammarby as they took just a point in their first three matches on the road, conceding seven goals in the process. They were able to get back on track in their most recent away game – a 2-1 success against Kalmar.

Stefan Billborn – who is in his third season in charge – knows that if his team are to challenge for Europe then they will have to improve on their travels.

Malmo vs Hammarby Betting Advice

Unsurprisingly considering their recent success, this is a fixture that Malmo have dominated. They have won the last seven at home against Hammarby. You have to go back 12 years for the last time the visitors left here with all three points. On the evidence we have seen so far this season then you would think that’s a record that is unlikely to change.

Malmo have yet to taste defeat on home soil this season and it’s 10 games since they have lost here in the league. Combine that with the visitor’s recent struggles on the road and they will have to put in an almighty performance to get that elusive win.

Key Facts – Malmo vs Hammarby Betting Tip

  • It’s five games unbeaten at home for Malmo this season, winning three of them
  • Hammarby have had an indifferent start to the campaign with three wins in nine games
  • Malmo have won the last seven home games against Hammarby dating back to 2008

Because of their dominance at home against Hammarby and the fact that they are in better form coming into the game, I see Malmo edging this and moving back into second place.
