Manchester City – Emphatic return to winning ways beckons?

Pep Guardiola watched on in December as his Man City side were ran close at Brentford Community Stadium, restricted to a single goal from 1.09 xGF – both modest returns for the league’s second best attack – in a 1-0 victory that was hard-fought. That was the eighth of twelve successive league wins between November and January for the reigning Premier League champions, a run that was ended last time out.

Southampton’s 1-1 draw against the Citizens on 22 January breathed new life into a title race that had already looked to be run, leaving City with a nine point advantage over Liverpool in second who have played one game fewer. It is important they get back to winning ways then, and they are hotly fancied to do so on their return to Etihad Stadium where they have won the last seven league games by an aggregate of 20-4.

Key Stat: No team has scored the game’s opening goal more times this season than Man City, who have gone on to win on all 17 occasions in which they’ve scored first.

Brentford – Bees no longer packing a potent sting?

On the same weekend Man City were seen cruising into the fifth round of the FA Cup with a 4-1 victory over Championship leaders Fulham, elsewhere Brentford were slumping to defeat by the very same scoreline away to an Everton team that until recently had been in disarray. Far from the most ideal of preparations ahead of a daunting visit to Manchester to take on the commanding league leaders.

That was a fifth straight loss in all competitions, scoring three and conceding 12, for a side which has taken just three of the last 21 points available to them in the league (W1 L6). Meanwhile, since stunning London rivals West Ham to win 2-1 at the London Stadium in early October, the Bees haven’t won away from home in seven attempts (D2 L5), shipping at least two goals each time.

Key Stat: After their first five matches in this their maiden Premier League campaign, Brentford had already recorded three clean sheets. However, in 18 subsequent outings in the competition they have managed only one shutout (1-0 vs Everton).

Manchester City Vs Brentford Betting Advice

No team are a shorter price to win their midweek fixture in the Premier League than Man City, which isn’t at all surprising. The hosts are looking for their seventh win in a row at this ground, having plundered 20 goals for the loss of just four here since a shock 2-0 reverse to Crystal Palace in October. Meanwhile Brentford are coming off five successive defeats in league and cup, leaking 16 goals across these matches.

Man City Vs Brentford – Key Facts:

  • These teams could not be in more contrasting forms, Man City winning 12 of their last 13 Premier League games and Brentford losing their last four on the bounce.
  • Man City have failed to win only two of eleven home league games this season. Of their nine victories in Manchester, seven were to nil while five saw them cover a -2 handicap.
  • Brentford are without a win on the road since a 2-1 victory over West Ham in October (D2 L5), conceding 2+ in all seven subsequent away outings in the competition.

Brentford struggled to impose themselves in the reverse fixture on a Man City side boasting more clean sheets than anyone else in England’s top-flight this term. Thomas Frank’s men are likely to find the going that much more tougher at the Etihad, however, where seven of the Citizens’ nine league victories were to nil and six were by a margin of at least two goals. Unfortunately for us, City are odds on to do both.
