Manchester City Preview – Etihad can spark City revival?

Perhaps the only positive takeaway from Man City (2nd – W18 D3 L7) having their game with Arsenal postponed will be the fresher legs suddenly available to Pep Guardiola, who would have almost certainly dipped into his deep squad during an intense period. After Burnley on Saturday comes Real Madrid in the second-leg of the Champions League at the Etihad, and you would imagine he would have kept his most important players (ie. Kevin De Bruyne) back with next Tuesday’s clash in mind.

Accumulative fatigue might not be as prevalent now, meaning Pep may adopt a stronger XI than even he anticipated. De Bruyne didn’t feature in last week’s 2-0 defeat at Old Trafford to Man Utd and is now in need of minutes ahead of midweek, and we all know how much he improves this team. Not that it should matter in this particular fixture. Guardiola boasts a perfect record as manager at home to Burnley, with his team winning all five home encounters whilst scoring 19 times for the loss of two goals.

Furthermore, Man City are generally a much more reliable proposition at their Etihad hub. Just the two teams winning there throughout 2019-20. Only Man Utd and Wolves managed it in the Premier League (W9 D2 L2) meanwhile, where City have netted at least twice in five consecutive matches – and at least once on all but one instance this season, which was in the aforementioned 2-0 loss to Wolves.

Burnley Preview – Clarets going strong at seven unbeaten?

Some were quick to write off this team as early as January. Four straight league defeats at that time provided enough ammunition for their doubters, but how often does a Sean Dyche Burnley (10th – W11 D6 L12) side endure rough patches only to come out the other side of them stronger and more prosperous for it? A seven-game unbeaten run followed (W4 D3), allowing them to open up a 12-point gap on the relegation places.

Maintaining this unbeaten sequence of theirs, which is the second-longest current run of its kind in the Premier League, should ensure another wholehearted effort from The Clarets despite already being well-positioned to avoid any end-of-season relegation anxiety. They will, however, need to buck their dire trend in this fixture, having lost six of the past seven league meetings. We need to hark back to 1963, meanwhile, for their most recent victory over Man City in Manchester (D6 L9 since).

Victory would make Burnley only the fourth team in Premier League history to ever win away at both Manchester clubs in the same season, according to Opta, after winning 2-0 at Old Trafford in January. That triumph has since been followed up by a 2-1 victory at Southampton and a 0-0 draw in Newcastle, conceding just one goal across their previous three away encounters.

Manchester City Vs Burnley Betting Advice

In last week’s 2-0 defeat away to Man Utd, it was the manner of the performance more than the scoreline which was most concerning. It isn’t often that Man City generate less than 1xG in any game and last week was comfortably their poorest attacking display of the campaign thus far. Kevin De Bruyne could return, which is a boost, but Burnley are in excellent form, with no loss in seven (W4 D3), and will set-up to frustrate at the Eithad.

Man City Vs Burnley – Key Facts

  • Man City have already lost more games during this season’s Premier League (7) than in any other league campaign during Pep Guardiola’s managerial career.
  • Burnley are on the second-longest current unbeaten run in the Premier League, winning four and drawing three of their past seven matches.
  • Etihad Stadium has not been a happy hunting ground for Burnley, who have tasted defeat on all five previous visits by a combined aggregate of 19-2.

Burnley’s record away to Man City is woeful although there is precedent for teams who prefer to sit deep and adopt counter-attacking tactics, with Crystal Palace (2-2), Man Utd (1-2) and Wolves (0-2) all ruthlessly punishing a makeweight City backline. Burnley or Draw looks big at 5/1 (Bet365). With the hosts possibly easing off the gas with Tuesday’s clash with Real Madrid in mind, I feel there is definitely value in backing Burnley with a couple goals head-start.
