Manchester City Preview – Will Pep delve into his deep squad?

Goals from Raheem Sterling, Kevin De Bruyne and Phil Foden ensured Manchester City (2nd – W19 D3 L7) avoided a false start on their return to the Premier League following the pandemic, cruising to a 3-0 win over ten-man Arsenal at Etihad Stadium. Proving that while their crown may be slipping in a season plagued by injuries and inconsistency, the current champions of England are still capable of producing performances of the highest quality.

Three points last week helped reduce the gap to leaders Liverpool to 22-points. An absolutely gargantuan lead that is almost certainly insurmountable, even for a team as formidable as this Man City side undoubtedly are. The Citizens only have themselves to blame, of course, losing on seven occasions already during this league campaign – and with nothing tangible at stake between the end of the season, that number could rise further still.

Pep Guardiola said as much (not that his team will lose more games, but that he sees more reason to experiment tactically and with personnel in the remaining fixtures). So it would therefore come as a surprise were there not a few changes Monday, as Pep tries to keep his squad fresh and content ahead of a congested run-in but also with this season’s newly-revamped Champions League format in mind.

Burnley Preview – Dyche and Burnley looking up rather than down?

Nobody seems to be talking about it, and perhaps that suits them seeing as the last time this club qualified for Europe it was almost relegated the very next season, but Burnley (10th – W11 D6 L12) could still have a say in the race for the European places. The Clarets resume their league campaign in the comfort of mid-table, a full twelve points clear of the relegation zone but only six behind fifth-placed Manchester United.

A point, or dare I say more, from this daunting trip to the Etihad would be a welcome boost to their cause especially as their remaining fixtures look good on paper – with five of their eight matches after this against side in the bottom half. A win, meanwhile, would see Burnley become only the fourth team in Premier League history to win away to both Manchester clubs in the same season, after winning 2-0 at Old Trafford in January.

That aforementioned win one of four during their current unbeaten league run spanning seven games and six months, since a 2-1 win at home to Leicester City on 19 January and up until their 1-1 draw at home with Tottenham on 7 March. Sean Dyche’s men were in excellent form then, however, whether their momentum has subsided during the enforced-break remains to be seen.

Manchester City Vs Burnley Betting Advice

Through the years this has been a cakewalk of a fixture for Man City, who have won seven of the last eight league meetings by an aggregate of 18-3. In all competitions, City have won five in a row at home whilst scoring at least twice against Burnley, whose most recent away win dates back to 1963. All rather ominous stuff. So, regardless of which players start, it is the hosts who are expected to claim all three points here.

Man City Vs Burnley – Key Facts

  • This season Man City have won 10 of their 14 home Premier League games (W10 D2 L2) – only Liverpool managing more.
  • Burnley were unbeaten in their last seven Premier League games (W4 D3) before the league was stopped, a run that included a 2-0 win in Manchester against Man Utd.
  • The last three Premier League meetings in Manchester were all won by Man City, though only one featured more than three goals.

The frightening prospect about Man City’s 3-0 win over Arsenal was that it could have been a lot more. The City attack continues to be the best in the country, so this could be a horrid first outing for a potentially rusty Burnley side playing its first competitive match for more than three months. The Clarets’ form pre-COVID-19 was outstanding, though, while Sean Dyche’s side are unlikely to be as porous defensively as Arsenal were.
