Manchester City – Eithad fear factor subsiding?

In the same week they booked their place in a first ever Champions League final, a win on Saturday would see Man City (W25 D5 L4) claim their fifth league title of the Premier League era – and third in the last four seasons. That they can complete the formalities in a match against the very opponent which derailed their bid for an unprecedented quadruple of major honours, makes it all the more sweeter.

Chelsea’s win in last month’s FA Cup semi-final should further fuel this team’s desire to wrap up another dominant league campaign at the first given opportunity. In the league, it is five wins from the last six. All but one was away from home, though. The anomaly, however, being the shock 2-1 loss here at the Etihad to a Leeds side which defended deep, and with numbers, before breaking to devastating affect.

Bearing in mind Chelsea will adopt a similar approach, Pep Guardiola will be mindful of committing too many men forward. Particularly as City have gone five successive home league games without keeping a clean sheet. Meanwhile, three of their four league defeats in 2020-21 have been at Etihad Stadium, with the last three visiting sides (Leeds, Man Utd and Southampton) all scoring twice.

Chelsea – Blues suited to playing on the road?

A third Champions League final, and first since lifting the trophy for the first time in 2012, awaits later in the month following a comprehensive showing over two legs against Spanish champions Real Madrid. Unfortunately, any celebrations from Chelsea (W17 D10 L7) will have to be put on hold because the safety net of a top-four finish, should they not emerge triumphant in Istanbul on 29 May, is still to play for.

With West Ham, in fifth, three points back, the wriggle room in these tense final rounds simply isn’t there. Win all of their remaining games and they will finish in the top-four for a third successive season. However this requires them winning away on Sunday at Man City, which would be a first since 2016. Succumbing to defeat on all three subsequent visits, and by a damning aggregate score of 1-9.

The Blues arrive in Manchester in confident mood though, and not simply because of the ease with which the Spanish champions were dispatched. In the 15 league games Thomas Tuchel has so far overseen, only one resulted in a loss. Recording 11 clean sheets, keeping their third in a row in last week’s victory over Fulham, and remaining unbeaten on the road. Winning ‘to nil’ at Liverpool, Tottenham and West Ham.

Manchester City Vs Chelsea Betting Advice

On Sunday, a precursor for the forthcoming Champions League final takes place. It promises to be another tactical affair between two extremely well coached teams, similar, no doubt, to last month’s FA Cup semi-final which Chelsea won 1-0 courtesy of a goal on the break. That was something Leeds utilised to devastating effect last time out at the Etihad, despite playing with a man less for a long period.

Manchester City Vs Chelsea – Key Facts:

  • Sunday will mark the third meeting of 2020-21 between these teams. Chelsea winning the most recent 1-0 in the FA Cup semi-final, with Man City 3-1 victors in the league in January.
  • No team has recorded more clean sheets in this season’s Premier League campaign than the 18 of Man City, despite conceding a goal in each of their past five home games.
  • Chelsea are still to lose a Premier League away game under Thomas Tuchel. The Blues registered a clean sheet in four of their seven away outings so far (W5 D2).

Clean sheets have been the bedrock of these team’s successful transformation under astute coaches. It is 18 in 34 Premier League games in 2020-21 for Man City, while Chelsea chip in with 11 from the 15 Thomas Tuchel has so far overseen since replacing Frank Lampard. The price about this contest ending goalless (8/1) certainly appeals, while City did win this fixture to nil in three of the previous four seasons.
