Manchester City – Impregnable Cityzens worthy favourites?

Pep Guardiola is embarking on his 60th game in charge in the knockouts of the Champions League, with no manager in the history of the competition earning more victories (31) than the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich tactician. Now at the helm of runaway Premier League leaders Man City, his current team has been nothing short of imperious on their way to a fourth successive quarter-final appearance.

The Cityzens, for all manner of reasons, have found this particular stage a step too far in recent times, suffering aggregate defeats to Liverpool, Tottenham and Lyon in the last-eight in each of the past three campaigns. They are in ominous form on this occasion, however, recording seven wins from eight matches and going 706 minutes without conceding since a 3-1 win in Manchester over FC Porto on Matchday 1.

Another German side, Borussia Monchengldbach, were swatted aside in the previous round with City easing to 2-0 wins in both legs. While Tuesday’s opposition will be a step up in quality, the English side can take enormous belief from their 10 wins in 11 previous meetings (D1) with Bundesliga opposition. They were also able to ease to victory at Leicester over the weekend while resting a host of important players.

Borussia Dortmund – Progress reliant on instrumental Norwegian?

Runners-up in Germany in each of the previous two Bundesliga campaigns. Borussia Dortmund are currently nowhere near that level, languishing seven points off the Champions League places after bringing up their tenth league defeat of the season on Saturday with the 2-1 reverse at home to Eintracht Frankfurt. All of a sudden then, their best route back into the competition is through winning the tournament itself.

Edin Terzic’s men now boast a solitary 2-0 victory over Hertha Berlin in their last five competitive matches (D2 L2), a run which features the 2-2 draw with Sevilla in the second leg of their Round of 16 tie. Fortunately BVB did enough in Spain to sneak through 5-4 on aggregate, but it has been far from ideal preparation ahead of a first Champions League quarter-final since 2016/17.

All but one of the team’s goals against last season’s Europa League winners came from Europe’s most coveted striker. Someone who is bidding to become only the fifth ever player to score in seven successive games in the Champions League. That player being Erling Haaland. Moreover, the 20-year-old Norwegian continues to be linked with a big money move in the summer to Tuesday’s opponents.

Manchester City Vs Borussia Dortmund Betting Advice

Between them they have lost one of sixteen combined matches in Europe this season, which might imply a closely fought tie is in store. Man City (W7 D1) boast seven successive clean sheets since conceding here at Eithad Stadium to FC Porto on Matchday 1, while Dortmund (W5 D2 L1) are averaging more than two goals a game having netted in all eight Champions League fixtures thus far.

Manchester City Vs Borussia Dortmund – Key Facts:

  • These teams are meeting for a third time, and first since the 2012/13 group stage when Dortmund followed up a 1-1 draw in England by earning a slender 1-0 win in Germany.
  • Man City are seeking to register their eighth successive clean sheet, with their current run of seven Champions League games without conceding the second longest in the competition’s history.
  • Dortmund have scored in all eight Champions League matches this season. Erling Haaland is the competition’s leading scorer with 10 and has netted in each of his previous six appearances.

Erling Haaland is bidding to join an illustrious group in the Champions League should he score for the seventh successive game. However, the Norwegian is up against a defence that is currently 706 minutes without a goal conceded in the competition. The likely absence of Jadon Sancho also hinders them. Nevertheless, I think the smart play here is backing the hosts maintaining their absurd form (26 wins from last 27 competitive matches (L1)) whilst conceding for change.
