Manchester City – Pep guarding against complacency?

Pep Guardiola has beaten 75 of the 77 teams he has faced during his managerial career. However, Leeds, along with Middlesbrough, is one of the two he is yet to get the better off after the Whites put his Man City (W23 D5 L3) team through the wringer in a 1-1 draw at Elland Road in October. Both teams have come a long way since then, but especially City, who are ominously closing in on their fifth Premier League title.

The Cityzens retain a 14-point lead atop England’s top-flight, ahead of a Manchester United side who have played a game less and would inflict the sole defeat on Guardiola’s side in their past thirty-five competitive matches (W31 D3). City have won all but one of the last 19 in the league, including the last three in a row, after recently easing to victory at King Power Stadium against high-flyers Leicester.

There was rotation in that latter encounter as Pep sought to preserve some of his key lieutenants for the midweek Champions League clash with Borussia Dortmund. It paid off, in the end, with City taking a slender 2-1 lead to Germany for next week’s return leg. In the meantime focus shifts to Leeds away. Man City are unbeaten, though, across their last 41 top-flight home meetings with newly-promoted sides (W36 D5).

Leeds – Whites hard pressed to maintain recent resurgence?

A trip to Etihad Stadium is a daunting prospect at the best of times but particularly now, at a time when Man City are absolutely flying and honing in on yet another domestic title. Yet if any team were to thrive at the sheer idea of undertaking such a challenge, it is this Leeds (W13 D3 L14) side under Marcelo Bielsa, whose players have shown they are capable of brilliance and capitulation in equal measure this season.

The raw statistics show Leeds have won one of their last nineteen matches (D9 L9) against teams beginning the day top of the Premier League. Meanwhile their record away to the current top-seven also makes for damning reading. There were defeats at Chelsea, Liverpool, Man Utd, Tottenham as well as West Ham, with the only bright spot a 3-1 win away to a Leicester side comfortably beaten last time out by Man City.

On the plus side, the Whites enter into this fixture in their best form since October. They are unbeaten in three, following up a creditable goalless draw at home to Chelsea by clinching successive 2-1 victories against Fulham and Sheffield United. Those were probably win they were expected to make, though, and the fact they made heavy weather of doing so doesn’t exactly augur well ahead of this Etihad examination.

Manchester City Vs Leeds Betting Advice

There weren’t many instances this season whereby you could legitimately declare Man City were a clear second best in any Premier League contest, but this was evidently the case when these sides played out a thrilling 1-1 draw at Elland Road in October. A game Leeds shaded the possession count – a phenomenal achievement in itself against this dominant City side – but completely bossed it on xG (LEE 2.71 – 1.45 MCI).

Manchester City Vs Leeds United – Key Facts:

  • The last time Man City hosted Leeds in a Premier League fixture was in a 1-1 draw in December 2003. City are unbeaten in 41 matches versus newly-promoted sides (W36 D5).
  • Man City have won 18 of their last 19 Premier League games, with 12 coming ‘to nil’. However, they had conceded in four successive matches prior to keeping back-to-back clean sheets.
  • Leeds have a miserable record away to the Premier League’s current top seven teams (W1 L5). Of these six encounters, five went Over 3.5 Goals and four seen both teams score.

I think we’re all anticipating some changes from Pep Guardiola with next week’s date with Dortmund in Germany in mind. That makes City vulnerable, against a capable but largely unreliable opponent in these sort of fixtures. So far games against the top seven sides in the table involving Leeds have seen four goals on average, with four of these six encounters also seeing both teams on target. This has the makings of something similar.
