Preview: Feeling sorry for themselves isn’t an option for Manchester City, who, four days on from the fallout of their collapse in the Champions League semi-finals, have a slender lead in the Premier League title race to protect. Can Newcastle do Liverpool a massive favour at Etihad Stadium?

Manchester City – Could midweek collapse derail season?

It’s happened again. In a remarkable match in Spain on Wednesday, Man City were mere minutes from reaching their second Champions League final in as many seasons. But, as has often been the case under Pep Guardiola, everything unravelled in the most astonishing fashion. They conceded twice in stoppage time and then again in extra-time, City’s demise compounded by a needless penalty given away by Ruben Dias.

A heartbreaking week could yet descend into full scale disaster should they drop points at home to Newcastle. Guardiola has a job on his lifting his players after that, but they will be heartened by the sight of their record against the Magpies. Man City would only fail to win five of the 28 previous league meetings (D4 L1) between the clubs, securing a 12th consecutive home victory with a 2-0 scoreline last season.

Key Stat: Man City have scored at least once in each of their last 26 Premier League meetings with Newcastle, with this the joint-longest such run in the competition’s history.

Newcastle – Limp Liverpool display cause for concern?

The Magpies’ run of four successive league wins was brought to a halt by the other team competing for the Premier League title, Liverpool, last time out. Naby Keita’s composed finish settling matters inside a noisy and passionate St James’ Park. While some were quick to praise Eddie Howe’s side for staying in the game, the reality was that Liverpool’s superiority on the pitch wasn’t fairly reflected in the scoreline.

On the basis of that performance, and with no home backing, avoiding consecutive defeats looks a tall order. And that is before even taking into account their atrocious record in this fixture. Moreover, the foundations for their stunning transformation under Howe has been strong results on Tyneside. Away from home Newcastle had lost three on the bounce before their recent 3-0 success against bottom side Norwich.

Key Stat: Sunday’s opponents Man City (33) are one of only two sides, along with Liverpool (41), to have earned more points in 2022 than Newcastle (32). However, the Magpies have lost three of their last four away league games.

Manchester City Vs Newcastle Betting Advice

You won’t find a shorter priced favourite all weekend in the Premier League than Man City beating Newcastle. The latter have managed to win only once in their last 28 top-flight meetings (D4 L23) and lost all of the previous twelve held here in Manchester. If that wasn’t nearly damning enough, Eddie Howe has tasted defeat every time he has faced Man City as manager, with this set to be his 12th crack at the Cityzens.

Manchester City Vs Newcastle United – Key Facts:

  • Any result other than a win is unthinkable for Man City, whose lead atop the Premier League is a solitary point. Newcastle, though, will have their sights set on achieving their first top-half finish since the 2017/18 season.
  • Man City are on a 12-game winning home run in the Premier League when facing Newcastle, whose last away victory in this fixture was way back in September 2000.
  • The Magpies have scored in 7 of their last 9 away league games. They face a Man City defence which has failed to keep a clean sheet in four of the last six competitive matches.

The immediate concern for the visitors then is they could find themselves up against a wounded opponent highly motivated to atone for their midweek capitulation by consolidating their slender advantage atop the league. I’m rather inclined to think the opposite, that there could be a vulnerability to City now. Moreover, Newcastle have scored away to Liverpool, Man Utd, Tottenham and West Ham in 2021-22.
