Manchester City – Final in sight following Paris turnaround?

A superb second-half display in Paris has Manchester City on the cusp of their first ever Champions League final, coming from behind at the Parc des Princes to lead 2-1 in the tie courtesy of strikes from Kevin de Bruyne and Riyad Mahrez. Both goals had a certain element of good fortune about them. In the end, though, the English side were very good value for their first-leg victory.

That accomplished performance in Paris means Pep Guardiola’s men have won all but one of eleven European matches in 2020/21, drawing the other 0-0 in Porto during the group. Previous champions Bayern Munich are the only team to plunder more goals in this season’s competition than the 23 of City, scoring twice or more on nine separate occasions. This includes all five knockouts games thus far.

At the other end of the spectrum, it is three successive European games whereby this otherwise imperious Man City defence has been breached. This after negotiating the first eight matches without a single goal being conceded, up until their quarter-final tie with Borussia Dortmund. None of their five opponents so far netted more than once, however. If these standards can be maintained, Istanbul surely beckons.

Paris Saint-Germain – Away record inspires hope of a comeback?

For the opening 45 minutes of this tie, PSG were near faultless. The versatile Marquinhos, playing as a centre-halve, had headed in from a set-piece to establish an early lead for the team from the French capital, only to wilt under the pressure exerted on them by a vastly improved Man City in the second period. For the record, they have never qualified from a European tie having lost the first-leg on home soil.

There is precedent for them delivering on the road this season, however, including in Manchester. Then under the guidance of Thomas Tuchel, Les Parisens secured a 3-1 win at Old Trafford against City’s fierce local rivals Man United that ultimately paved the way for them reaching the knockouts rounds – where they subsequently registered memorable wins in Spain and Germany over Barcelona and Bayern Munich.

Kylian Mbappe was on target in both those outings, netting a hat-trick in a 4-1 win at Camp Nou before his brace in Munich secured a 3-2 victory in a memorable contest over the side that defeated them in Lisbon in the final last term. It means PSG have only failed to win one of five away matches in this season’s competition, having won ten of their last seventeen (D2 L5) away from home overall.

Manchester City Vs Paris Saint-Germain Betting Advice

In Paris, Man City finished proceedings firmly in the ascendancy having turned round a 1-0 deficit at half-time to claim a 2-1 victory. It means PSG, who did score on at least two occasions in four of their five away victories in the competition already, need to become the first visiting team this season to breach this formidable City defence more than once if they are to progress to the final in Istanbul.

Manchester City Vs Paris Saint-Germain – Key Facts:

  • The omens bode well for Man City’s chances of progressing to the final. The Citizens are unbeaten across these side’s four prior meetings (W2 D2), winning the last to be held in England 1-0 in April 2016.
  • Man City, who have netted 2+ goals in nine of their eleven Champions League games this term, have won all five home games in the competition this season.
  • PSG boast four wins out of five away from home in Europe in 2020/21, thrashing Barcelona 4-1 in Spain and edging Bayern Munich 3-2 in Germany in the earlier knockout rounds.

PSG simply have to go for it. They were extremely clinical in both away legs in the prior rounds, notching seven times from chances equating to 4.56xG, and require a similar level of efficiency against quite arguably the meanest defence in Europe. Idrissa Gueye, who usually tidies up in front of the back-four, is absent for the visitors meaning City – averaging two goals per game in Europe this term – will get more joy than in Paris.
