Preview: The first piece of English silverware of 2020/21 will be captured on Sunday by one of either Man City or Tottenham, who are meeting for the third time this season having already shared a win apiece thus far. It will be winner takes all at Wembley then, with Pep Guardiola’s men favourites to lift the trophy for the fourth successive season.

Manchester City – Cup holders firm favourites to retain crown?

Breaking records has become commonplace for this team. They can rewrite a few more on Sunday, however, should Pep Guardiola and Man City get their hands on another League Cup. They are odds on favourites to do so as well, facing a Tottenham side 24 points worse off in this season’s Premier League and whom they beat in resounding fashion as recently as February, winning 3-0 at Etihad Stadium.

Spurs have generally been a thorn in Man City’s side, however. In particular here in London, where City lost three consecutive meetings between 2019 and 2020. None were at Wembley, though, which is not only the venue for Sunday’s final but the place Tottenham called home for the best part of two seasons in 2017/18 and 2018/19 – a period which saw Pep Guardiola’s side record back-to-back away victories.

Victory on Sunday, meanwhile, would see Guardiola become the first ever manager to win this competition in four consecutive seasons. For Man City, lifting the trophy would mean moving level with Liverpool as the most successful club in League Cup history. However, they too could be shorn of their most influential performer. Kevin De Bruyne sat out the midweek win at Aston Villa and remains doubtful.

Tottenham – Wembley hopes hinge on Kane availability?

In his second game in charge since replacing the ousted Jose Mourinho on an interim basis until the end of the season, 29-year-old Ryan Mason can become the first Tottenham manager in thirteen years to win a major trophy. His task in Sunday’s final could be made more difficult, though, should Harry Kane fail to recover in time from an ankle problem that kept him out of Wednesday’s 2-1 win over Southampton.

No player has found the net more often in the Premier League this season than Kane, with the England international leading the way with 21 goals. His potential absence would leave a huge void in this team, leaving the new manager shorn of someone whose goals but more so his ability to hold up the ball and link up with others, in particular with Son Heung-min, is irreplaceable in this side.

Mason didn’t do anything revolutionary with his first team selection as Spurs secured only their second win in seven competitive games, winning a match despite trailing at half-time for the first time in 2020/21. Gareth Bale was handed a rare start, though, repaying the faith with a delightful equaliser. Has he staked a claim for a starting berth in the club’s biggest match since the 2019 Champions League final.

Manchester City Vs Tottenham Betting Advice

Even with Kane, this looks a monumental task for Tottenham. They have won only twice in seven matches, recently sacked a manager whose record in cup finals is among the best in the business, and for the first 45 minutes against Southampton on Wednesday were completely outclassed. Interim manager Ryan Mason could be relying on an off-day from Man City more than a miracle recovery from his star striker.

Manchester City Vs Tottenham – Key Facts:

  • For Man City, this is a fourth consecutive final of the League Cup, winning each of the last three. Only Liverpool (8) has lifted the trophy more times than them (7).
  • Tottenham have won this competition four times, more recently in 2008. They have since lost two finals, to Man Utd in 2009 and Chelsea in 2015.
  • Man City halted a three-match winless run versus Spurs when winning 3-0 at the Etihad in February. However, Spurs did triumph the last three times these teams met in London.

An off-day from the current Premier League leaders would have seemed unthinkable not that long ago. Yet it is now five matches without a clean sheet for a Man City side which looked impregnable for much of the campaign, while last week’s lethargic display in defeat to Chelsea in the FA Cup semi-final was disconcerting. There is also no John Stones, and possibly no Kevin de Bruyne, for manager Pep Guardiola.

Each of Man City’s last three victories in all competitions were by the same 2-1 scoreline, and another narrow-margin success for a team bidding to win a fourth consecutive League Cup appeals at the odds.
