Preview: Old rivalries renew in the Premier League on Sunday as Manchester United and Arsenal lock horns at Old Trafford in the weekend’s standout fixture in England. The last two league meetings held here have ended in a share of the spoils and, with neither side excelling so far, a third certainly isn’t unthinkable.

Manchester United Preview – Ole looking to Rashford for inspiration?

The Red Devils warmed up for Sunday by dismantling the current leaders of the German Bundesliga, putting five past RB Leipzig at Old Trafford on Wednesday to move top of their Champions League group in some style with a 5-0 victory. In particularly inspired form was Marcus Rashford, who, in between helping some of the nation’s deprived kids, found time to net a hat-trick in midweek. Inspirational stuff all round.

It has been more than 14 years since United were last beaten at home in the Premier League by their once fierce rivals, Arsenal. That run comprises eight wins and five draws, so their dominance hasn’t exactly been one-sided, with last season’s encounter at the Theatre of Dreams ending in stalemate (1-1) for a second season running. In fact, the hosts have won just one of the last four league meetings here (W1 D3).

What Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would do for a rare win on Sunday, then, with his team languishing in 15th-place in the table, albeit playing a game less than most, after two wins through their first five fixtures (W2 D1 L2). Neither triumph came at home, where they have already tasted defeat to Crystal Palace, 1-3, and Tottenham, 1-6, and have now failed to win at Old Trafford in the league for five matches (D3 L2).

Arsenal Preview – Gunners lost their way after bright start?

According to Opta, Mikel Arteta can become the first Arsenal manager to win his first two games in charge against Manchester United since 1925. The Spaniard helped mastermind a 2-0 victory when these teams clashed in North London at the Emirates in January, as goals from Nicolas Pepe and Sokratis – neither of whom feature regularly these days – sealed a surprisingly comfortable success.

Encouragingly, The Gunners have now opened up a four-game unbeaten run in the league versus Man Utd, winning the last two meetings held at their ground whilst earning creditable draws here at Old Trafford on each of their last two visits. Yet their record as the away side is dubious, at best, with zero wins recorded across the previous thirteen seasons since a 1-0 win in September 2006.

Coupled with some questionable form this season, losing three of their last four league games since opening with back-to-back victories over Fulham and West Ham, and it is difficult to get excited about their chances on Sunday. Particularly with Arsenal delivering timid showings on the road already this season at Liverpool and Man City, with their sole away win thus far against bottom-of-the-table Fulham.

Manchester United Vs Arsenal Betting Advice

In recent times it is Arsenal who hold the upper hand, winning twice and losing none of the past four league meetings. However, at Old Trafford it has been predominantly one-way traffic with Man Utd coming out on top in eight of the past thirteen league encounters since last losing here in 2006. That is fairly ominous, especially as under Arteta The Gunners are still to win away at any of the traditional ‘Big Six’ (D1 L4).

Manchester United Vs Arsenal – Key Facts

  • Following last week’s 0-0 draw at Old Trafford with Chelsea, Man Utd are now without a home win in the Premier League for five matches (D3 L2).
  • It is now three defeats in four Premier League outings for Arsenal, who are striving to avoid a third consecutive away defeat having lost at both Liverpool and Man City.
  • Each of the last two Premier League head-to-head meetings here at Old Trafford have ended in a draw, with Arsenal without an away win here since September 2006 (D5 L8 since).

Neither has struck up any consistency this season, which is why both reside in the bottom half of the table coming into this game. For all Man Utd were impressive in midweek, the fact remains they haven’t won at home in the league in five (D3 L2), and were held to a dour goalless draw here by Chelsea last weekend. Meanwhile, Arsenal tend to set-up on their travels with a view to not losing. Therefore a third-straight Old Trafford draw between the two beckons.
