Preview: At Old Trafford on Sunday, both Manchester United and Brighton go in search of their third consecutive Premier League victories. It is a fixture that lends more kindly to the hosts, though, who have prevailed here in each of the last three seasons.

Manchester United – Attackers with something to prove?

The prospect of Man Utd (W16 D9 L4) ending this season with their first piece of silverware since capturing the League Cup and Europa League in 2016/17 diminished further with the 3-1 FA Cup quarter-final loss to Leicester City before the break. Manager Solskjaer was quick to remind everybody – his players but also any disgruntled supporters – that there is still plenty on the line in the remainder of the campaign.

Finishing as the best of the rest in the Premier League, behind champions-elect Man City, is now the only incentive domestically for this group of players. Top four is essentially wrapped up so it remains to be seen just how motivated this team is to push for a goal that only carries internal significance. Just four wins from the last nine league outings (D5) hints at some members of this team feeling their works is done.

United have scored three times in four Premier League games (six goals in eight in all comps) and while the defence has picked up the slack with clean sheets, it isn’t unthinkable to imagine opponents whose needs are greater boasting desire to match, acquiring positive results. Besides, it may only require the odd goal to do so – the Red Devils scoring one goal or none in nine of their last 15 top-flight fixtures.

Leandro Trossard (Brighton) To Score

Brighton – Seagulls profiting from Trossard purple patch?

If only they could play Newcastle every week. Victory at The Amex for Brighton (W7 D11 L11) before the break made it back-to-back 3-0 wins over Newcastle, after producing a similarly dominant display at St James’ Park earlier in the season. More importantly, it was three vitally important points towards their survival cause with Graham Potter’s men now six points above the Premier League’s bottom three sides.

For a long time in that Newcastle game, it looked like being another frustrating evening whereby Brighton were well on top and clearly the superior side, but were unable to convert this dominance into actual goals. Leandro Trossard‘s long-range effort shortly before half-time changed that, however, and the Belgian has been a standout performer recently, netting four times across his last four starts for club and country.

Up next for the in-form Trossard is a trip to Old Trafford, where he hopes to inspire Brighton to a first ever win. Fixtures against Everton and Chelsea await after, meanwhile. However, The Seagulls can approach this daunting run of games in a positive frame of mind. Victory at Southampton last month means they are seeking a third straight win for the first time in more than two years.

Manchester United Vs Brighton Betting Advice

Opta inform us that only Man City (70) and Chelsea (82) have allowed fewer shots on their own goal than Brighton (92) this season. Marry this to Man Utd’s improved defensive form, with clean sheets in four successive league games, and we could be in for a rare drab encounter between sides whose last six competitive meetings went Over 2.5 Goals and produced 3.8 goals per game on average. Not to mention Brighton being notoriously profligate in the final third.

Manchester United Vs Brighton – Key Facts:

  • In all competitions, Manchester United have won each of their last five meetings with Brighton, scoring exactly three goals in all of the last four.
  • Five of Manchester United‘s last six Premier League games went Under 2.5, however, four of these were away, with six of their last seven home games going Over 2.5 Goals.
  • Brighton arrive at Old Trafford having won their last two Premier League games, scoring more in these matches (5) than in their previous eight league games combined.

On a personal level, opposing Man Utd hasn’t been a profitable venture recently. This despite Solskjaer’s men winning only four of their last nine in the league. Undeterred, I believe Brighton can cause this visibly fatigued and less potent United side problems on Sunday. The Seagulls possess a rotten record there, losing on all three Premier League visits, but arrive on a high seeking their third successive victory.
