Preview: Some rustiness is to be expected from a Burnley side last seen out on a football pitch more than two weeks ago. Sean Dyche’s men have been handed a tricky assignment on their return to action, visiting Old Trafford to take on a Man Utd outfit boasting just one defeat in their last 13 Premier League meetings with the Clarets.

Manchester United – Rangnick not liking what he’s seeing?

Failure to overcome second-from-bottom Newcastle on Monday means Man United have ground to make up on fourth-placed Arsenal, who are now seven points clear of the Red Devils who do have a couple of games in hand. It was another frustrating day at the office for Ralf Rangnick meanwhile. The German remains unbeaten in the role (W2 D1) but has seen his new team struggle against the division’s bottom two.

United were abysmal at St James’ Park and could count themselves extremely fortunate to escape with a point. That is now three scored in as many games, while they are yet to score more than once in four competitive games under the new manager. On a more positive note, they are unbeaten in five league games (W3 D2), winning the last two home fixtures against in-form Arsenal (3-2) and Crystal Palace (1-0).

Key Stat: David De Gea produced another stellar effort to somehow prevent Newcastle from scoring more than once last time. At Old Trafford, United have recorded one clean sheet across their last 13 Premier League games – though that did come in their sole outing there under Ralf Rangnick (vs Crystal Palace).

Burnley – Clarets can put fresh legs to good use?

Despite not seeing action for 18 days, after their previous three league fixtures were all postponed, Burnley can climb out of the bottom three provided they pick up all three points from their trip to Old Trafford and Watford don’t at home to West Ham. Achieving their end of the bargain won’t be easy, though. For this is a side with one win to their name all season and are yet to register an away win in 2021-22 (D4 L4).

The Clarets haven’t been seen since playing out a goalless stalemate with West Ham on 12 December, their third successive outing without scoring. This might imply that a break was what this team badly needed, but they were proving difficult to beat. Sean Dyche will be hoping they can rediscover the form that seen them lose one of the last seven league games and only two of the past ten (W1 D7 L2).

Key Stat: Burnley have managed just three shots on target across their previous three Premier League games, failing to score in each of these games. The last time they went four or more contests without scoring in the top-flight was in November 2020.

Manchester United Vs Burnley Betting Advice

Although they were incredibly fortunate to only concede the one goal at Newcastle in their most recent encounter, the goal they did end up conceding was their first in three league games since Ralf Rangnick signed on as interim coach. Wins to nil at home to Crystal Palace and away to Norwich preceded the poor showing at St James’ Park, but that merely masks a vulnerability to this United defence.

Manchester United Vs Burnley – Key Facts:

  • Allan Saint-Maximin’s goal in the 1-1 draw with Newcastle was the first conceded under Ralf Rangnick by Man Utd, who now face a Burnley side which has failed to score in their past three league contests.
  • However, Burnley have a surprisingly good record of finding the net away to Man Utd, doing so in five of their past six visits to Old Trafford in the competition.
  • Furthermore, it is one clean sheet registered in the previous 13 Premier League home games by Manchester United.

The visit of Burnley, without a goal in their last three league outings, would suggest the home side’s clean sheets prospects are healthy once more though. However, prior to this barren spell, the Clarets had netted in four straight fixtures and in four of eight away from home this season. They’ve also managed to score on five of their past six trips to Old Trafford, where Man Utd have one clean sheet in 13 home league games.
