Manchester United – Rangnick reign can begin on positive note?

This Sunday Manchester United make the bold leap from caretaker manager to interim manager. It is a move few of Europe’s top club dare to pull off, possibly because it makes next to no sense, but supporters will finally get to see Ralf Rangnick in the Old Trafford dugout. The 63-year-old inherits a supremely talented side, if admittedly flawed, one that is four points from the top-four ahead of a charitable run of fixtures.

United are not set to face any team that finished in the top-half last season until January, with four of their next six opponents currently sitting no higher than 12th. In theory this should provide the new boss with a platform from which to rebuild the club’s shaky foundations, but this is Manchester United. A team seventh for good reason having won only twice across their previous nine league games (D2 L5).

Thursday’s richly entertaining 3-2 victory at Old Trafford against former rivals Arsenal was the shot in the arm this group desperately needed though. The Red Devils had amassed one point from a possible nine beforehand and lost three of their past four Premier League home games (D1). However, they are still having to endure the club’s longest wait for a clean sheet at home (15 games in all competitions) since 1959.

Crystal Palace – Viera looking to replicate predecessor’s Old Trafford exploits?

Patrick Viera has earned his fair share of positive reviews in his short time as Crystal Palace manager. However, while the brand of football is noticeably more appealing to the eye, wins remain elusive. Tuesday’s 1-0 defeat to Leeds at Elland Road now means they have won just three Premier League games all season (D7 L4), with none of these coming across their previous three outings in the competition.

The Eagles had done enough to merit a minimum of one point in midweek, though. Instead they were made to rue a last minute penalty concession. Christian Benteke hardly covered himself in glory either, spurning the visitors best chance. That now one point taken from the last nine available (D2 L1), while the blank at Elland Road marked the first time Palace hadn’t managed a goal in nine league games.

Under Roy Hodgson, Palace would cause quiet the stir in last season’s corresponding fixture. Wilfried Zaha’s double catching the Red Devils cold as the South Londoners recorded their second successive victory at Old Trafford, a ground they have not last at in their past three league visits (D1). Having already won in Manchester this season, turning over Man City 2-0 in October, can Viera’s Palace spring another surprise?

Manchester United Vs Crystal Palace Betting Advice

Last season, Manchester United failed to win either of their league meetings (1-3h, 0-0a) with Crystal Palace, who are also unbeaten here at Old Trafford in three visits (W2 D1) seeking a third successive victory on Sunday. The feel good factor engulfing the red side of Manchester cannot be ignored, though, with Ralf Rangnick taking over a disjointed side coming off Wednesday’s thrilling 3-2 triumph here against Arsenal.

Manchester United Vs Crystal Palace – Key Facts:

  • Crystal Palace avoided defeat across both league meetings last season, while they haven’t been beaten at Old Trafford in three visits (W2 D1), winning there 3-1 in 2020-21.
  • Thursday’s 3-2 victory at home to Arsenal means Manchester United haven’t prevented any of the last 15 visiting teams (in all competitions) to Old Trafford from scoring.
  • All three Man Utd home league wins this season were despite conceding, while Crystal Palace have netted at least twice in four of seven Premier League away games so far.

The bare facts don’t lie though, and they show Man Utd winning one of their last four Premier League home games. The hosts simply don’t keep clean sheets here any more either, which spells trouble. Crystal Palace have either scored two or more (four times, W1 D3) or none (three, L3) across their seven away league games this season, but recorded only one defensive shutout of their own. Though that was at Man City!
