Preview: For the first time since March 2020, fans will be in attendance at Old Trafford for a Premier League game as Manchester United go searching for the win that would see them confirmed as runners-up for 2020/21. Can a Fulham side with little other than pride provide any meaningful resistance, at a ground they last won at in 2003?

Manchester United – Goals at both ends becoming the norm?

With a Europa League final on the horizon, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be keen to regain some belief and momentum ahead of facing Spanish side Villarreal in Poland eight days on from hosting already-relegated Fulham. It will also be the first and only match of the season with fans inside Old Trafford, making the prospect of another makeshift side similar to the one which faced Leicester here last Tuesday unlikely.

That encounter being one of three league games to have taken place in the space of five days. Central defender Harry Maguire limped out of the first, with United (W20 D10 L6) subsequently conceding six times in two home outings. The 2-1 loss to Leicester could be put down to Ole naming a weakened team, but the manner in which Liverpool dispatched them 4-2 was alarming as the deficit could have been larger.

All six Premier League defeats in 2020/21 have now come at home, conceding 27 in total at the ‘Theatre of Dreams’ – with that their highest ever such tally in a single campaign. They were, however, unbeaten in fourteen top-flight matches prior to last week’s demanding schedule. Meanwhile, six of the last seven league games, home and away, seen them both score and concede including six of the past seven here.

Man Utd Win By Two Goals

Fulham – Scott Parker’s men more potent on their travels?

The Cottagers’ sorry end to a campaign which always looked likely to end in an immediate demotion back to the Championship, which was confirmed earlier in the month following a 2-0 loss at home to Burnley, was compounded last time out. A 3-1 scoreline at St Mary’s, against a Southampton side that has struggled themselves for much of this campaign, consigning them to a third successive defeat.

Fulham (W5 D12 L19) have now failed to win any of their past eight Premier League games (L7) since a shock 1-0 victory at Anfield over last season’s champions Liverpool. Scott Parker’s side have found goals especially elusive, with a return of 26 from 36 games the second-lowest in the division behind only bottom side Sheffield United. Their consolation at St Mary’s was their first from open play in more than seven hours.

However, no side this season from England’s top-flight has notched a higher percentage of their goals away from home than Fulham (65% – 17/26). The West Londoners scored in 12 of 18 away fixtures, finding the back of the net against seven the teams currently in the top half of the table. Yet they have now lost three of the last four on the road – all by a two-goal margin – drawing only with Arsenal in that time.

Manchester United Vs Fulham Betting Advice

Both sets of managers will have one eye on planning for the future. For Ole Gunner Solskjaer, it is all about getting his team in the right shape and frame of mind for a European final, whereas Scott Parker will want his team ready and raring to go for the start of life in the Championship next season. The latter are looking for their first league win at Old Trafford since a 3-1 scoreline in October 2003 (D1 L10 thereafter).

Manchester United Vs Fulham – Key Facts:

  • Old Trafford has not been a happy hunting ground for Fulham, who are seeking their first league win here for more than 17 years (1-3 win in 2003), losing on 10 of 11 subsequent league visits.
  • Five of the nine home wins accrued by Manchester United this season saw them concede on at least one occasion.
  • Fulham have scored in 12 of their 18 Premier League away games this term, but have lost three of their past four on the road, each time by exactly two goals.

Considering the home side’s comparative struggles at home this season – all six league defeats have come here, along with 27 of the 42 goals they have conceded (64%) – there could be some joy for the visitors. Fulham, who have scored in four of their past five away matches, netted 65% of their total goals on the road and will fancy their chances of breaching a Man Utd defence with one clean sheet in seven league games.
