Manchester United – All the momentum with Ole’s men?

Arguably the most presentable scoring opportunity fell to Paul Pogba when these sides clashed in the Premier League last weekend, the Frenchman contriving to find Alisson with his goal bound effort instead of the net as Manchester United applied late pressure at Anfield in search of a famous victory. On current form, the midfielder would have expected to see the net ripple such has been his keen eye for a goal.

Pogba had netted the only goal in the 1-0 win at Burnley prior to the goalless affair on Merseyside, which was followed by Wednesday’s long-range curler at Craven Cottage that settled the contest with Fulham. Essentially, Pogba has kept his team on top of the table, and a hard-earned rest could be coming his way on Sunday much in the same way he sat out the 1-0 win at home to Watford in the previous round.

This season United have made a habit out of making life difficult on the road. Less so at Old Trafford, where they have won four of their past five matches with the 2-0 EFL Cup semi-final exit to Man City the exception. That remains their sole defeat in twelve competitive fixtures (W8 D3 L1), so they are in a good frame of mind to reach the fifth round of this competition for the sixth season running.

Liverpool – Klopp has rare crisis on his hands?

As is so often the case, the moment when you think it cannot possibly get any worse is when it invariably does. This certainly rings true for Liverpool following Thursday’s shock 1-0 defeat at the hands of Burnley at Anfield that left their 68-game unbeaten home record in tatters. More than losing one of the most discussed records in recent times, that result compounded a rotten period for the English champions.

Aside from their 4-1 win over Aston Villa’s kids in the previous round of this competition, Liverpool have gone their past five matches without winning (D3 L2), since thrashing Crystal Palace 7-0 at Selhurst Park before Christmas, having failed to find the back of the net in each of the last four. The latter statistic a first for Jurgen Klopp since his Mainz team did so in the German Bundesliga in 2006.

It does all feel rather bleak right now, with no spark in sight and scant little quality on show from a collective which swept aside all before them in 2019/20. Progress in the FA Cup, a competition they last won for a seventh time in 2011/12 and have only once made it further than the fourth round across the past five seasons, could yet prove to be the catalyst for a turnaround in fortunes.

Manchester United Vs Liverpool Betting Advice

I was speculative last weekend when I predicted goals and although the match itself didn’t really play out like a goalless draw, that was exactly what it was: the fourth 0-0 between these sides in the last nine meetings. All those were in the league, though. Meanwhile, all of the last five held in the FA Cup went the way of the home side that day, meaning Liverpool’s miserable spell could be compounded on Sunday.

Manchester United Vs Liverpool – Key Facts:

  • In each of the last five seasons Man Utd have managed to reach the FA Cup Fifth Round, a stage Liverpool have featured in only once across this same timeframe.
  • Whereas Man Utd come into this fixture in superb form having lost once in 12 competitive games (W8 D3 L1), Liverpool arrive in a rut with one win in six (W1 D3 L2).
  • Each of the last four meetings between these sides have resulted in fewer than three match goals, while all but one of those encounters finished in a draw.

Last week’s disappointing spectacle now means that each of the past four encounters between these two behemoths of English football have gone Under 2.5 Goals, with three resulting in a draw. Both managers are expected to utilise their squad for this clash, and that, in theory, might suffice in bringing a typically dull fixture to life. Realistically, though, another tight affair seems likely. For that reason, another draw stands out.
