Preview: For some, it is the biggest fixture of any Premier League season. To others it is grossly over hyped. Whichever side you fall on, Sunday’s latest instalment of an age old rivalry has the hallmarks of a classic as two attack-minded outfits slug it out in front of a raucous Old Trafford crowd.

Manchester United – Three points matter more to Red Devils?

Recent results would indicate Sunday’s eagerly anticipated encounter at Old Trafford is must win for the home side, who have won just one of the last ten Premier League meetings between the teams and were defeated in a six-goal thriller in last season’s corresponding fixture. Already five points adrift of leaders Chelsea, though, coming into the weekend, a win would revive hopes of a first league title since 2013.

Performances continue to leave a lot to be desired though. Wednesday’s 3-2 win at home to Atalanta, while tremendously entertaining, highlighted familiar failings in their tactical set-up. The defence remains incredibly porous. In particular at set-plays, with that now nine matches without a clean sheet. Last keeping any visiting team quiet when beating Granada (currently 17th in La Liga) in April.

In the league, United have conceded in nine straight home games, collecting just eight of the last 21 points at the Theatre of Dreams (W2 D2 L3). So we have to assume any win on Sunday – that in itself seeming fanciful on the back of three wins in their last eight in all competitions – would need to be achieved the hard way. Which is reflected in the 4/1 about a home clean sheet, nearly twice that of Liverpool (11/4)!

Liverpool – Salah and Company too hot to handle?

Jurgen Klopp will be the more content of the two managers, despite both seeing their teams run out victors by the same 3-2 scoreline earlier in the week. Very few depart the Wanda Metropolitano with all the spoils but that was exactly what Liverpool did against Atletico Madrid. A brace from the player some believe to be the best on the planet at this precise juncture settling an engrossing encounter.

Salah has now netted in his last ten appearances for the Reds, which includes the last six in the league. The Egyptian’s sole blank in the Premier League this season came in Liverpool’s 2-0 home win against Burnley in mid-August, scoring in all four away outings. Meanwhile he scored in both trips to Old Trafford last term (3 in total), and could become the first ever Liverpool player to do so in three consecutive visits.

More importantly, Salah can help push his team to a second successive away league win in this fixture – a feat not achieved since 2002. Their form is such that they come into the fixture as favourites. Strong ones at that. Klopp’s charges boast the longest unbeaten league run in the top four tiers (18 – W13 D5). Although this season has seen them falter in match-ups with Chelsea and Man City, drawing both.

Manchester United Vs Liverpool Betting Advice

If last season’s meetings at Old Trafford are a precursor for what is to come on Sunday, we could be in for quite the spectacle. For a long time this fixture was renowned for producing turgid affairs lacking in goalmouth action, let alone actual goals. Not last season. Eleven goals came from those games, with United shading the one in the FA Cup 3-2 but Liverpool responding in the league decisively, winning 4-2.

Manchester United Vs Liverpool – Key Facts:

  • Following Liverpool’s 4-2 win at Old Trafford in the league last season, Man Utd have only managed to win one of the last ten Premier League meetings (D6 L3).
  • Liverpool (W5 D3) also sit above Man Utd (W4 D2 L2) in the current standings. The former, unbeaten in the league thus far, are four points better off in second.
  • Both meetings between the sides at Old Trafford in 2020-21 went Over 4.5 Goals and saw both teams score at least one goal in each half.

Considering how vulnerable both sides were defensively in midweek, it is no surprise to see Over 2.5 Goals priced as short as it is (generally 8/13). It is a bet that should deliver, however. United simply don’t do clean sheets any more and won’t be able to live with Liverpool’s in-form front three. However, the visitors aren’t watertight themselves and arrive having shipped eight goals in their last five in all competitions.
