Preview: After their heavy 5-0 loss last time out at Old Trafford to Liverpool, there is ample pressure on Manchester United to deliver a strong riposte when welcoming noisy neighbours Manchester City – who failed to win on either of their previous two league visits (D1 L1) – for the Saturday lunch-time kick-off.

Manchester United – Porous United relying on forwards delivering?

Nobody is doing more to keep Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the Manchester United dugout than Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese scored both goals in midweek to help rescue a scarcely deserved 2-2 draw away to Atalanta in the Champions League, only days after scoring the opener with a sumptuous volley, before laying on the second, in the Red Devils’ resounding 3-0 victory over Tottenham in the Premier League.

Solskjaer isn’t out of the wood yet though. The performance in Italy felt like a continuation of those seen throughout the season, with United usually second best and reliant on moments of brilliance from their talented crop of players. The Norwegian can, however, fall back on a strangely impressive record over his managerial counterpart, having won four of eight prior meetings with Man City’s Pep Guardiola.

Maintaining that record won’t be easy for a side without a clean sheet in thirteen consecutive home games or that regularly gives away cheap goals. Their form at Old Trafford simply hasn’t been good enough of late either. The recent chastening 5-0 defeat to Liverpool means they are winless in three here in the league (D1 L2), with Anthony Martial the scorer of their only home goal across this period.

Manchester City – Wounded City to bounce back in derby?

If the Cityzens were suffering from any lack of confidence following their surprising 2-0 defeat at the Eithad to Crystal Palace last time out in the league, they certainly didn’t show it. As four days on they were back to their free flowing best, putting four goals past Belgian side Club Brugge to return to the summit of their Champions League group. But the real acid test awaits at Old Trafford on Saturday.

That loss to Palace was only a second of this 2021-22 Premier League campaign for Man City, and first since going down 1-0 in North London away at Tottenham in their very first outing, ending a run of eight without defeat (W6 D2). Meanwhile it was already the third instance this season whereby they didn’t manage to score at least once in a league fixture, which is as many as they had in the entirety of last season.

Having also drawn a blank in each of the past three meetings with their Manchester rivals, there can be no guarantee City immediately revert to type. For this is a fixture that has caused them more issues lately than most, with Pep Guardiola winless in four versus Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men (D1 L3). Yet, with 15 wins out of their last 18 Premier League away games, City do go into the game as justified favourites.

Manchester United Vs Manchester City Betting Advice

Goals should be the order of the day at Old Trafford. Manchester United, who are without a Premier League home win in their last three attempts (D1 L2), haven’t kept a clean sheet in front of their own fans in thirteen consecutive home games in all competitions. Meanwhile City, beaten for the first time in the league for eight games last time, are all of a sudden looking vulnerable, conceding in six of the last eight matches.

Manchester United Vs Manchester City – Key Facts:

  • In Premier League meetings only, Manchester United are currently unbeaten in four Manchester derbies (W3 D1) having recorded a clean sheet in all of the past three.
  • Expect that to change, however, as Man Utd haven’t kept a clean sheet in any of the last 13 home games in all competitions, conceding five in the last such fixture (0-5 vs Liverpool).
  • Not that Man City are model of defensive solidity these days. The Cityzens backline has been breached in six of the past eight matches, giving up three goals across their last two Premier League away outings.

So we’ve come to the conclusion there will be goals on Saturday, but who is best placed to pick up all three points? Man City. That’s the simple answer. Pep Guardiola will demand a response to last week’s Palace defeat and elected to rest Ruben Dias and Kevin de Bruyne in midweek. Moreover, the Cityzens have won three of their last four on the road in the league, only denied at Liverpool when they were the better team.
