Manchester United – Red Devils playing catch up?

Defeat in Switzerland to Young Boys on Matchday 1 has the three-time European champions on the back foot in Group F. Cristiano Ronaldo had them ahead with his 135th goal in the competition, extending his lead in the all-time goalscorer standings. However an Aaron Wan Bissaka red card and costly late error from Jesse Lingard condemned Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side to a 2-1 scoreline in Berne.

In three subsequent games, the Norwegian has presided over back to back 1-0 defeats – both here at Old Trafford – and a fortuitous win away at West Ham, where a David de Gea penalty save in the final minute of time added on preserved the victory. Last losing three successive competitive home matches in 1979. They went unbeaten in five, meanwhile, in 2020-21 versus Spanish sides (W3 D2, excluding penalty shootouts).

United didn’t concede in any of their first four match-ups against teams from La Liga last season (vs Real Sociedad and Granada), a run that would end in the Europa League final. Overall though, the ‘Red Devils’ are in the red as far as their record when facing Spanish opposition goes, winning only 25 per cent of such matches (W16 D24 L22) and none of the five previous between the sides in question (D5).

Villarreal – Emery’s charges stalemate specialists?

Stalemate was how the Yellow Submarine negotiated their first group stage fixture in Europe’s premier club competition in ten years, but it was anything but dull. Maiden Champions League goals for Manuel Trigueros and Arnaut Danjuma helped secure a 2-2 draw against Atalanta in Spain, a contest Unai Emery felt his team should have won after a positive attacking display at El Madrigal.

Since then, Villarreal have continue in a similar vein – remaining difficult to beat and competing well. Saturday’s goalless stalemate at the Santiago Bernabeu with Real Madrid, who were in red hot form beforehand, kept up their undefeated start to the campaign. What it does mean, however, is that Unai Emery’s charges have one win on the board thus far, remarkably playing out seven draws in eight matches.

Just the five conceded, with four clean sheets, indicates a rearguard that will be difficult to break down in Manchester, recording a defensive shutout in their two prior visits (both in this competition, in 2005 and 2008). Intriguingly, they have either scored at least twice (three times) or none at all in all (four) their last seven matches, making it hard to gauge their true capabilities ahead of a trip to the Theatre of Dreams.

Manchester United Vs Villarreal Betting Advice

Those expecting end-to-end drama in a repeat of last season’s final from the Europa League could be in for a rude surprise. These clubs are meeting for a sixth time with all being from 2005 onwards. That aforementioned final, which Villarreal eventually won on penalties after it ended 1-1 during normal time, was the only one to feature any goals, with all four previous encounters going the exact same way: 0-0 draws.

Manchester United Vs Villarreal – Key Facts:

  • There have been two goals scored between these sides in their five previous meetings, with four of these failing to produce any goals and all five ending in a draw.
  • Whereas Manchester United are coming off back-to-back defeats, losing three of their past four encounters (W1), Villarreal remain unbeaten in all competitions this season (W1 D6).
  • Defending is an area where both teams excel. When combining their 15 competitive fixtures this season, they have only conceded on twelve occasions between them.

Bearing in mind these sides have been reasonably solid defensively this season – Man Utd conceding nine in eight games, and no more than once in all but one (the 2-1 loss to Young Boys on Matchday 1). Meanwhile Villarreal were breached just six times across eight fixtures, recording four clean sheets – there is every chance we could see a similar outcome to those previous between the sides.
