Manchester United Preview – More toil at Old Trafford for Ole?

Whenever the pressure is on, this team comes up clutch. So when the writing appeared to be on the wall for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after damaging defeats to Arsenal and Istanbul Basaksehir, it was almost inevitable that immediately prior to the international break they would go to Goodison Park in the league and become the first visiting side this season to beat Everton. The Norwegian lives to fight another day.

United supporters must be desperately hoping their 3-1 win last time out against Everton is the catalyst for a sustained period of positive results, because a return of three wins and ten points from their first seven league games is well below the standards expected of a club with title aspirations. On early evidence, though, even making the top four is going to be an uphill battle.

On Saturday, Man Utd can register successive league victories for the first time this season. That it happens to be against a struggling West Brom side should be encouraging, however, since 2013 United have only beaten their opponents once in five Premier League meetings (W1 D1 L3). Add to that their rotten record at Old Trafford of late, with no win in six (W3 L3), and suddenly this is a fixture fraught with danger.

West Brom Preview – Baggies thrive at the Theatre of Dreams?

It has been a tough start to the season for the promoted sides. Between them they have amassed 17 points of a possible 72. West Brom account for just three of that sum, relying on the odd draw here and there to keep them barely ticking over, as they remain one of three sides – along with Burnley and last season’s play-off winners Fulham – still without a league win in 2020/21.

On the face of it then, a trip to a potentially rejuvenated Manchester United would be the last thing manager Slaven Bilic would ask for. Yet their record in this fixture, particularly away from home, is nothing short of extraordinary. The Baggies have bagged the win on three of their past five visits to Old Trafford in the Premier League, with three of the last four seeing them keep a clean sheet.

Considering West Brom’s only clean sheet thus far came at home to Burnley, who are the division’s lowest scorers, can we safely assume that another is not likely to be forthcoming on Sunday? No team has shipped more away goals on average (2.5 per-game) than the Baggies, having lost by two clear goals in three of their four away outings so far at Everton (5-2), Fulham and Southampton (both 2-0).

Manchester United Vs West Brom Betting Advice

In recent times, certainly under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Manchester United have retained a very clear preference for playing specific opponents: thriving against those who come at them and leave space for United’s pacey and nimble attackers to operate, but all too easily stifled against sides that sit deep and are compact. West Brom are neither here nor there, but they do not appear capable of hurting United at Old Trafford.

Manchester United Vs West Brom – Key Facts:

  • Of the 12 league goals Manchester United have scored this season, only two were at Old Trafford, and both came in crushing defeats to Crystal Palace and Tottenham.
  • Since a 5-2 loss at Everton, all three of West Brom‘s subsequent away matches have produced exactly two goals.
  • Old Trafford can be classed as a happy hunting ground for West Brom, securing all three points on three of their previous five league visits (W3 D1 L1).

Since 2013, West Brom have visited Old Trafford five times and departed with the win on three occasions. As impressive as that is, this current iteration of the Baggies inspires no-one. Meanwhile, we perhaps shouldn’t read too much into Man Utd’s poor home record thus far, considering the calibre of sides faced dwarf that of Saturday’s opponents, who were beaten by two clear goals in all but one of four away outings this season.
