Pick: Under 2.5 Goals

Preview: Four wins from the last five in the league suggests Manchester United are gathering momentum heading into the second half of the season. They will be confident of extending that run against Wolves, who are without a win at Old Trafford for forty years.

Manchester United – Results improving under Rangnick?

Since dismissing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as manager in November after one win in eight Premier League outings, Manchester United have remained unbeaten in all competitions and secured maximum points in four of six subsequent league games. A sense of vindication then for the club’s owners. Meanwhile the decision to appoint Ralf Rangnick as interim manager until the end of the season has so far had the desired affect.

Victory over Burnley at Old Trafford last Thursday made it three wins from four in the competition under the Austrian. While some were critical of the performances, it is worth noting only in their 1-0 win against Palace did they not win the xG battle. Finding a clinical edge will be high on the new coach’s agenda, though, scoring just seven goals – and no more than once on three occasions – in those four league outings.

Key Stat: After Aaron Lennon grabbed a consolation in Thursday’s 3-1 defeat to Man Utd last time out at Old Trafford, it is now one clean sheet in 14 Premier League home games for the Red Devils.

Wolves – Will we see a fresh or jaded Wanderers?

One of the downsides to inheriting this squad from the previous manager, Nuno Espirito Santo, was its lack of depth. Wolves simply haven’t had sufficient numbers to field a competitive line-up for their last two fixtures. However, Bruno Lage sounded hopeful of welcoming back several key players in time for this fixture to go ahead, which would mark their first since holding Chelsea to a 0-0 scoreline on 19 December.

That was among a number of creditable showings against some of the better teams in the division. In fact, Wolves have only been beaten by more than a single goal margin on two occasions all season (2-0 losses vs Brentford and Palace). They are also yet to concede more than twice. Therefore, provided enough big hitters are fit and healthy, Wanderers will rate their chances of leaving Old Trafford with something.

Key Stat: With 27 goals in their 18 league games so far, no team this season in the Premier League is seeing a lower goals return per game than the 1.5 of Wolves. In addition, all of their past eight league fixtures saw no more than one goal (four in total).

Manchester United Vs Wolves Betting Advice

In the reverse fixture at Molineux in August, Wolves battered Man Utd (xG: WOL 2.55 – 0.86 MNU) yet lost 1-0. David de Gea was exceptional in the United goal and has been recently too, helping United to record four wins in the last six league outings and concede only twice across the last four. So there could easily be a sense of deja vu at Old Trafford, where Wolves are winless in ten league visits (D3 L7).

Chelsea Vs Bayern Munich – Key Facts:

  • A 1-0 victory at Wolves in August means Manchester United have won each of the last three encounters between the sides. They’re also unbeaten as hosts since 1980! (W7 D3).
  • The Red Devils are up to six matches without defeat in the Premier League, winning four. Conversely, Wolves have won only once in their last six top-flight games (D3 L2).
  • Three of the four Man Utd league games under Ralf Rangnick produced no more than two goals, while each of the last eight Wolves games featured no more than one.

United have already made short shrift of an opponent that was coming off a lengthy lay-off when beating Burnley 3-1 last Thursday. Wolves won’t have played in 15 days, so could they go down in similar fashion? The table suggests not. I think goals, or opposing them, is the way to go though. United scored once in three of the last four while Wolves’ last eight all went below Under 1.5 Goals, making the 9/10 available about Under 2.5 Goals appealing.
