Manchester United – Group F winners to sign out on a win?

After missing out on qualification to the knockout rounds last season, there must have been a sense of relief when a couple of late goals in Spain on Matchday 5 guaranteed the three-time European champions progress as section winners. Jadon Sancho was among the scorers last time, along with Cristiano Ronaldo who is bidding to become the second player – after himself in 2017/18 – to net in all six group games.

It has been quite the turnaround from the Red Devils. Having found themselves immediately on the back foot in Group F following their shock 2-1 reverse in Switzerland to Young Boys first time out, United then remained unbeaten, winning three of the next four encounters. Their 2-2 draw in Italy versus Atalanta the exception. The inevitable Ronaldo striking towards the end of each half to salvage a precious point.

Ronaldo would also deliver telling blows in both Old Trafford contests thus far. The Portuguese scoring decisive winners against Villarreal (2-1) and Atalanta (3-2) after United had trailed both times. Those are among five victories across their previous eleven Champions League home games (D1 L5), a record as unconvincing as some of United’s performances at the Theatre of Dreams this season.

Young Boys – Wagner to be left ruing missed opportunities?

Victory at home to Wednesday’s opponents in the opening round of fixtures should have provided the Swiss outfit, league title winners in each of the last four seasons, with a platform from which to kick on and seriously contest for a top two finish in Group F. That hasn’t happened, and in fact, they could exit European competition altogether should they fail to repeat their famous win on 14 September.

David Wagner has previous in England, but won’t remember his visits to Old Trafford all that fondly. As Huddersfield Town’s manager he lost twice in the Premier League away to Manchester United in 2018. Knowing they cannot finish any higher than third, now the German must mastermind a famous win whilst also hoping for a favourable outcome in Italy – where Atalanta must also lose at home to Villarreal.

Wagner can only control what his team does, which is arguably the most taxing part of the permutation. Young Boys are yet to score on the road so far, beaten to nil at Atalanta (1-0) and Villarreal (2-0). Giving them a record of played five, lost five, scoring only once, away from home in the Champions League group stage. Moreover, their overall record versus English opponents is damning: W2 D1 L6.

Manchester United Vs Atalanta Betting Advice

With the hosts already qualified, it will be interesting to see whether Cristiano Ronaldo gets his way by starting from the off on Wednesday. The Portuguese is looking to equal a feat only he has ever achieved, which is scoring on all six matchdays of a Champions League group stage. Had Ole Gunnar Solskjaer been in charge, one senses the 36-year-old might have gotten his wish granted, but will Ralf Rangnick have other ideas?

Manchester United Vs Young Boys – Key Facts:

  • Since losing to Young Boys (W1 D1 L3) on Matchday 1, Man Utd (W3 D1 L1) have collected 10 points out of 12 to clinch top spot in Group F with a game to spare.
  • Cristiano Ronaldo has scored across all five matchdays so far and is looking to match a feat only himself as has ever achieved by netting in all six group stage matches.
  • Young Boys are yet to score an away goal in the Champions League group stage, losing all five such matches including both in this season’s tournament (1-0 vs Atalanta, 2-0 vs Villarreal).

This is undoubtedly a more important fixture for Young Boys. The Swiss side despeately need all three points from their visit to England. David Wagner’s men face a taller order though, having yet to even muster a goal on their travels across all five prior UCL away group games. However, United hadn’t kept a clean sheet until their 2-0 win at Villarreal last time. Although they did limit Crystal Palace to precious little on Sunday (1-0 win) in Rangnick’s first game in charge.
