Newly crowned Premier League champions, Manchester City, were held to a disappointing 0-0 draw by Huddersfield Town at the Etihad Stadium which kind of rained on the hosts’ parade as they unveiled and paraded the league trophy in front of their fans.
However, City have another chance to end their season off in style on home turf when they play host to Brighton who celebrated their Premier League survival with an excellent 1-0 home win over City’s crosstown rivals, Manchester United.
That result would have brought many a smile to City fans, and tonight’s hosts have won three of their last four with wins over Tottenham, Swansea City and West Ham, while at home they’ve posted an impressive 15-2-1 58/13 record to date. They now face the league’s lowest goalscorers on the road in the division.
Onto Brighton and The Seagulls achieved a fantastic result on the weekend when they took all three points with a 1-0 home win over Manchester United which secured their top flight status for another season, while United manager, Jose Mourinho, was definitely not smiling.
It’s an amazing achievement for a club of Brighton’s stature and testament to manager Chris Hughton and his backroom staff that they’ve held their own against the big boys, particularly when you consider that Brighton were within an inch of dropping out of the Football League and facing liquidation 20 years ago.
Brighton have reached the magic 40-point mark in recent weeks thanks to picking up points against Huddersfield Town, Tottenham and Burnley, as well as the decisive win over Manchester United. However, an away record of 2-5-10 9/22 includes an 11-game stretch without an away win, as well as failing to score in 11 of their 17 away matches to date.
I’m therefore expecting Manchester City to win here by keeping a clean sheet.
