Manchester City Preview – Can Guardiola and his City players avoid any slip-ups and keep their dream alive?

The expectation when Pep Guardiola arrived at Manchester City four years ago was that he would be have led the club to their first Champions League title by this stage. Guardiola won the competition twice with Barcelona but ultimately failed at Bayern Munich despite leading the Germans to a plethora of semi-finals. At the moment, it’s very much a case of can (or has to) do better. Particularly as Manuel Pellegrini was responsible for City’s only appearance in the semi-finals the season before Guardiola arrived.

With Lyon standing in their way it seems the perfect opportunity for Guardiola to at least match that but with eyes set firmly on winning the whole thing.

 

City have saved their best for the Champions League this season. They have won six of their eight games and yet to be beaten. In that time they have defeated Real Madrid home and away, and with some ease as well. They had scored the joint second most goals heading into the quarter-final stage with 20 in eight games.

Guardiola has committed to a fifth season regardless of what happens here but it does appear to be their best opportunity yet. Although similar was said when facing the likes of Tottenham and Monaco in previous seasons before elimination.

Lyon Preview – Are Lyon set to cause a huge shock and make the semi-finals for the first time in a decade?

Rudi Garcia was not a popular appointment when taking over Lyon midway through the 2019/20 campaign but he has managed to get the club through to the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the first time in 10 years. That was also the season when the Ligue 1 club reached the semi-finals which remains the only time they have gotten that far.

If Lyon are to make the last four again then they will have to cause an almighty shock but their run to this stage has shown they can be competitive against Europe’s top sides.

It wasn’t pretty. It was back to the walls. And they rode their luck. But the 2-2 aggregate win over Juventus will give this team the belief they need heading into Saturday’s encounter in Lisbon.
