Manchester United Prediction – Can Manchester United improve?

Be careful what you wish for – Manchester United fans were a pretty disgruntled bunch of supporters whilst former manager, Mourinho, was in charge.

But at least he brought Champions League football back to Old Trafford following a runners-up position in the Premier League, season before last.

Okay, the football wasn’t pretty and in no way resembled the swashbuckling style that United fans had become accustomed to under Alex Ferguson during the halcyon days.

However, although Mourinho’s replacement, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, enjoyed a successful start to his tenure at his former club as a player, the honeymoon period is well and truly over.

A 6th place finish at the end of last season was the result of an alarming slump in form towards the end of the campaign.

United failed to win any of their final 5 matches of the season, which culminated in an embarrassing 2-0 loss at home to relegated Cardiff City on the last day of the season.

Earlier, the Red Devils had succumbed to losses against Everton and their fierce local rivals, Manchester City, who rubbed further salt into United’s wounds when they clinched the league title.

The one saving grace for the hosts though is their usually solid form at Old Trafford; they ended last season with a home record of 10-6-3 33/25.

Manchester United are also unbeaten in their last 6 encounters at home against today’s opponents, Chelsea.

Chelsea Prediction – Can new-look Chelsea get off to good start?

New Chelsea manager, Frank Lampard, faces what could be a very difficult season in this his first ever job at Premier League level.

Indeed, Lampard has only just 1 season in the Championship under his belt in an extremely short apprenticeship, and he’ll inherit a weaker squad than his predecessor, Sarri, enjoyed.

The departure of Chelsea’s best player of last season, midfield magician Eden Hazard (to Real Madrid), will leave a big hole that may not be fully filled this term.

Hazard (16 goals) almost single-handedly carried Chelsea to a 3rd place finish at the end of last season which saw The Blues qualify for the Champions League.

A much-weakened squad will prepare for this new season, with striker Higuain also returning to Juventus, and much will depend on Pedro for goals this term.

Pedro was Chelsea’s second highest goalscorer last term with 8 goals, so the likes of Abraham, Giroud, Willian and Batshuayi will need to shoulder the workload up front.

Chelsea ended last season though with just 1 win out of their last 5 matches of the campaign which was a 3-0 home win against London rivals, Watford.

With just 2 away wins out of their last 9 matches on the road though, Lampard will be mindful of the need to get off to a good start at Old Trafford.

Key-Facts – Manchester United v Chelsea

  • Manchester United lost just 3 of their 19 home matches last season in the EPL
  • Chelsea won just 2 of their last 9 away matches in the EPL last season
  • Manchester United are unbeaten in their last 6 at home against Chelsea

Betting Tips Verdict

Manchester United arguably have the better quality in the final third with the likes of Rashford and Martial up front, while Chelsea will need to adapt to Lampard’s style.
