We’ve reached the last eight of the Europa League in what has been a unique season. Manchester United are big favourites to progress to the semi-final when they face Copenhagen on Monday.

Manchester United Preview – Can the 2017 winners get to within one game of reaching the final once again?

Before Project Restart the ambition of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Manchester United was to qualify for the Champions League. At that stage it was through the Europa League which seemed the most likely way of achieving that but United returned to Premier League action very strongly and can now relax somewhat having finished third and will return to Europe’s premier club competition for the first time in three years.

Solskjaer will not be happy to rest on that, however, and is likely to look upon the Europa League as a real opportunity to win some silverware. Ironically, the last trophy United lifted was the Europa League back in 2017 under Jose Mourinho.

The second leg of United’s last-16 tie against LASK was a formality having been 5-0 up from the first game played back in March. United completed the job with a 2-1 win at home last week and come into this game as huge favourites to reach the semi-finals.

Solskjaer did opt to make a number of changes last week as he has done throughout the season in this competition. It’s likely it will be a stronger team which takes the field tomorrow night in Cologne.

Copenhagen Preview – Will Copenhagen cause a huge upset and continue what has been a superb run up until now?

Whilst Solskjaer may just be completing his first full (albeit extended) season in charge of Manchester United, Copenhagen’s Norwegian coach is at the veteran stage of his career. Stale Solbakken is in his second spell in charge of the Danes having rejoined in 2013 following a five year spell previous to this. It’s only until now that they have made any significant impact on Europe, however. This is the first time Copenhagen have reached the last eight of a European competition.

In many ways their run in the Europa League has come at the expense of their title defence where they could finish only second and by some distance too.

Copenhagen have been excellent throughout their run to the last eight, beating off more fancied opponents along the way. In the knockout stages they have gotten the better of Celtic and more recently Istanbul Basaksehir. The 3-0 win at home in the second leg against the Turkish champions was as good a result and performance as they have shown so far.

Interestingly, that win last week was just one of four victories they have had in their whole Europa League campaign. On one hand it shows their resilience but is also an indication of their lack of quality.

Manchester United vs Copenhagen Betting Advice

It is the tie that all teams would have wanted at this stage and there should be little in the ways of complications for Manchester United as they look to progress. It’s somewhat of a cliche but it’s an achievement for Copenhagen to reach this stage alone.

Solskjaer’s team were unbeaten in their return to Premier League action following the break – winning six and drawing three. They also scored 22 goals in the process.

Key Facts – Manchester United vs Copenhagen Betting Tip

  • United have already qualified for next season’s Champions League but will be looking to clinch some silverware
  • This is the first time Copenhagen have reached the quarter-final stage of the Europa League
  • The clubs last met in the 2006/07 Champions League when they split the games with a win each

It’s been a dream run for the Danish club but it will likely come to an end here. United have kept seven clean sheets in their 10 Europa League matches this season and can record another one here.
