Manchester United play their first game since losing in the Europa League semi-final as they host a Crystal Palace team who are already off the mark for the season.

Manchester United Preview – Can United get what they hope will be a productive campaign off to a winning start?

United, along with their Manchester rivals City, are the last two teams to get their seasons going following participation in European competition to close out the previous campaign. For United that was an agonising defeat in the semi-final of the Europa League, losing to Sevilla. There have been further trying times since that loss with failed transfers and the criminal proceedings brought against captain Harry Maguire.

All of that will mean United supporters cannot wait to see their team take the field in this one and attempt to better the fourth place finish from last season.

The big signing for United is Dutch midfielder Donny van de Beek who joins from Ajax. He will add further strength to a midfield which already includes Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes. That trio are going to be hugely important if Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men are going to be closer to the top two of Liverpool and City.
With no Jadon Sancho it also means the forward trio of Mason Greenwood, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford are likely to be the main source of goals. At least for the first few weeks of the season.

Crystal Palace Preview – Will Palace repeat their heroics from last season to make it back to back wins at Old Trafford?

The never-ending speculation surrounding the future of Wilfred Zaha combined with an underwhelming previous campaign meant that expectations of Palace supporters for this season were mooted. Roy Hodgson has came in for a lot of criticism due to the style of play. There are some who were suggesting a slow start could see a change of manager. Hodgson is far too experienced to let that impact him or his players, though, and that was the case last week.

Up against a Southampton team of whom there has been a lot of buzz and excitement over, Palace took the points courtesy of a winner from Zaha. Whether their star man is here come the 6th of October remains to be seen. But he’s contributing whilst he is.

Two players who have came in and will excite Palace fans are Ebe Eze and Michy Batshuayi. Eze made his debut from the bench last week and will bring a lot of creative flair in the final third. Whilst Batshuayi joins for another loan spell having previously scored five league goals when at Selhurst Park in the second half of the 2018/19 season.

The Hodgson approach to the game will not change too much but the players above will mean they carry more threat in attack.

Manchester United vs Crystal Palace Betting Advice

It’s a home fixture to start the season against a team who finished 14th and failed to win any of their last eight games of the previous season. It should be a game that United take three points from but that was also the case the previous two seasons. Palace have enjoyed their trips to Old Trafford in the last couple of years. A draw in 2018/19 was bettered with a 2-1 success at  similar stage last season.

Hodgson’s approach is not for everybody but it’s effective. Especially away from home. And United have to overcome it.

Key Facts – Manchester United vs Crystal Palace Betting Tip

  • United will be looking to build and improve on their fourth place finish from last season
  • Palace continue to defy their critics by recording a win on the opening day of the campaign
  • Hodgson’s team have taken four points from their last two visits to Old Trafford

Both teams to score has won in 10 of United’s last 16 home games in the league. That includes their final three matches against West Ham, Bournemouth and Southampton. Taking Palace’s final four away games out the picture when they were dire, the Eagles notched in nine of their 12 away games before that. Both teams to score looks a good value selection in this one.
