Preview: Neither Newcastle or their manager, Steve Bruce, possess a record at Old Trafford that would suggest a successful outcome is forthcoming on Sunday. Yet with one win from their last five top-flight matches, can Manchester United be relied upon this weekend?

Manchester United – Bruno to the fore once more?

A run of one Premier League win in five has cost Manchester United (W13 D7 L4) valuable ground in the title race, with league leaders Man City now ten points better off. Even a top-four finish is by no means assured now that the gap to fifth-place West Ham is down to merely four points. It all makes three points from Sunday’s presentable fixture with hapless travellers Newcastle a must.

United boast a formidable record in this fixture, both here at Old Trafford (one defeat in last 35 home games vs Newcastle) but also more recently. The emphatic 4-1 victory at St James’ Park earlier in the season their fourth across the past five top-flight meetings, having also won the last three held in Manchester by a combined score of 11-4. After finding their scoring boots in midweek, another big scoreline seems inevitable.

Bruno Fernandes was once again to the fore in Thursday’s Europa League clash in Spain with Real Sociedad, netting a brace in a phenomenal team display as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side romped to a 4-0 victory. The relatively short turnaround is a slight concern, especially with the Norwegian naming a strong side. However the confidence should do them the world of good as they look to get their league form back on track.

Newcastle United – Bruce with a Wilson-shaped hole to fill?

Six of the seven away league defeats suffered by Newcastle (W7 D4 L13) over the course of this season were by at least a two-goal margin. This does not augur well for their chances ahead of Sunday’s daunting visit to Old Trafford, where they have claimed one win in thirty-five prior league visits (W1 D9 L25) – a 1-0 scoreline in December 2013 when the Red Devils were at a low ebb.

The Magpies were also resoundingly beaten 4-1 in this season’s reverse encounter, despite netting the opener inside two minutes and remaining on level terms until four minutes from the end. A similar outcome could have dire consequences on the league table, which has them directly above the relegation zone in 17th. Six points clear of the bottom three after a seventh defeat from their last nine league outings.

That defeat, a 2-0 scoreline at Stamford Bridge against an improving and in-form Chelsea, came as little surprise although the manner, with no meaningful attempts on goal throughout the entire match, was cause for concern. It also hinted at the struggles that may lie ahead in the continued absence of star striker Callum Wilson, a player who has contributed 40% of this team’s total goals in the league this season.

Manchester United Vs Newcastle Betting Advice

Even at such prohibitively short odds, a Manchester United side that has looked laboured all too often in the league lately should have far too much going forward for this blunt Newcastle outfit to contend with. The latter have lost five of their last six away Premier League games without so much as scoring and will once again need to make do without top scorer Callum Wilson.

Manchester United Vs Newcastle United – Key Facts:

  • One win from the last five Premier League games for Man Utd (W1 D3 L1). Newcastle, meanwhile, boast two wins in four but also seven defeats in nine.
  • Newcastle have been beaten to nil in five of their past six away league games, however, Man Utd have only recorded three home wins to nil so far this season.
  • Four of the past five Premier League meetings ended in victory for Manchester United, who are seeking their fourth successive home success over Newcastle.

In the reverse fixture, Man Utd were three goals better than Newcastle, who conceded three inside the closing stages but were second best throughout. Something similar cannot be ruled out: Newcastle were beaten by two clear goals on six occasions away from home this season. Meanwhile Man Utd, fresh from scoring four in Europe on Thursday, netted 12 across their previous two home league games.
