Maribor will be looking to get ahead in this third qualifying round first leg of the Champions League when they entertain Icelandic outfit, Hafnarfjordur at their Ljudski vrt ground.
Maribor have won three of their last four matches in all competitions which include wins over Zrinjski in the previous qualifying round with a 2-1 win in the away leg, and back-to-back wins in the new domestic Slovenian 1.SNL season against Aluminij and Triglav respectively.
Maribor registered a 3-2 aggregate win over Zrinjski in the second qualifying round, and the hosts have posted some pretty solid results on home turf in recent seasons in the Champions League as they’ve suffered just one defeat from their last eight matches played. Notable results include holding the likes of Celtic, Sporting and Chelsea to draws a couple of seasons ago.
Visitors Hafnarfjordur won the Icelandic Urvalsdeild title last season by a four point margin over runners-up Stjarnan and they went into this year’s Champions League at the second qualifying round of the competition.
The previous round saw Hafnarfjordur register a 3-1 aggregate win over Faroe Islands club Vikingur, following a 1-1 draw in the first leg at home, which they followed up with a 2-0 win away from home in the second leg.
However, tonight’s visitors have recorded just three away wins from their total of 11 away matches played at this level to date, and they’ll do well to head into the second leg of this tie with the scores still level I fancy.
