Perennial Slovenia 1.SNL champions, Maribor, are seemingly on their way to the third qualifying round of the Champions League following a 2-1 win away at Bosnia and Herzegovina side, Zrinjski, in last week’s first leg in Mostar.
Maribor now hold home advantage at their Ljudski vrt ground, and if last season’s domestic campaign is anything to go by, tonight’s visitors Zrinjski will have a tough time of it as they look to overhaul the hosts in order to progress to the next qualifying round.
Maribor suffered just two defeats all season on home turf, and they made a good start to their new campaign in last week’s opening 1.SNL match against Alumnji, winning 1-0. Forwards Zahovic and Brazilian Tavares are the dangerous attacking personnel for the home side.
Visitors Zrinjski have played a few club friendlies leading up to their Champions League tie with Maribor, winning all three games against Tomislav, GOSK Gabela and Vitez, but with all due respect, they came undone when facing superior opposition in Maribor last week.
Zrinjski have failed to win any of their last six matches in the Champions League which includes four defeats, along with a previous 2-0 defeat on aggregate against tonight’s opponents, Maribor, when they played each other three seasons ago.
They’ve lost their last three matches on their travels at this level with losses incurred at Slovan Bratislava 4-0, Maribor 2-0 and Legia Warsaw 2-0, so the writing appears to be very much on the wall for this evening’s outcome for Zrinjski.
