Hammarby proved to be too good for Maribor in the first leg of their Europa Conference League qualifier last week and will be looking to complete the job in Slovenia on Thursday.

Maribor Preview – Do Maribor have enough to overturn first leg defeat and progress to next round?

Maribor’s European campaign started in the first round of qualification for this competition and they dealt with Urartu of Armenia comfortably enough, winning the tie 2-0 on aggregate with a pair of 1-0 wins home and away. That earned them this match against Hammarby but they have plenty of work to do if they are to overturn the first leg reverse. Nino Zugelj got their goal last week taking his tally to three in all competitions. He hadn’t scored a senior goal before this campaign.

Maribor are only competing in this competition having lost 3-1 on the final day of last season to Mura who finished above them because of that result, despite finishing level on points with their domestic rivals.

Our betting prediction
Both teams to score
(odds taken 2000 GMT, Tuesday 27 July)

Simon Rozman’s men have started this league season in good form with two wins from as many games and scoring six goals in the process. Regaining their title will be the priority but they would also like to progress in Europe and that will require a big performance here.

There’s certainly no shortage of goals in Maribor’s home games. Their last six have all had at least three goals in them with a total of 24. The fact they need two goals just to take it to extra time should see plenty of action at both ends in this game.

Hammarby Preview – Can the Swedes follow up last week’s win and complete the job?

Milos Milojevic has been in charge of Hammarby for a little over a month but has had an instant impact both domestically and in Europe. Hammarby are unbeaten in their last five games and have won four of them. The Swedes have scored 13 goals in that time which vindicates the decision to sack Stefan Billborn.

The former coach led Hammarby to Swedish Cup success which qualified them for the Europa Conference League but an eight place finish in the league last season combined with a slow start this term meant his position was untenable.

Hammarby currently sit in fourth place in the Allsvenskan and eight points behind leaders Malmo but with a game in hand. The prospects of qualifying for Europe via the league is a real possibility this time around.

Astrit Selmani was the hero last week scoring a hat-trick. The Kosovan moved from Varberg in the close season  having finished second top scorer in the Swedish top-flight and although not having hit the same level of form domestically as yet, showed real quality in the first leg and will be key to helping Hammarby finish off the job.

Maribor vs Hammarby Betting Advice

Hammarby will be delighted with the outcome of the first leg and they are now big favourites to make it into the third qualification round. Cukaricki or Sumgait will await the winners of this and you sense both of these teams will fancy their chances against either of those.

Maribor had the disappointment of going out to Coleraine in last year’s Europa League qualification so this would be another blow if they fail to overturn the first leg defeat.

Key Facts – Maribor vs Hammarby Betting Tip

  • Maribor have started the domestic season with two wins and scored six goals across both matches
  • Hammarby are unbeaten under Mils Milojevic with four wins and a draw in five games
  • Whoever wins this game will play either Cukaricki from Serbia or Sumgait of Azerbaijan

I’m happy to leave the result of this game alone and instead look at the goal markets. I alluded to the number of goals that occur at Maribor’s home games and Hammarby’s last five games have seen 17 goals. Over 2.5 looks an obvious bet in this one and both teams to score is always worth backing.
