Marseille take on Angers at their Stade Vélodrome on Sunday evening in the knowledge that taking all three points here could see them move top of the French Ligue 1 above early leaders Monaco on goal difference.
Marseille have made a good start to the new French top flight campaign as they’ve registered back-to-back wins over Dijon 3-0 at home and Nantes 1-0 away, as well as now seeming to be in the box seat ahead of their second leg Europa League qualifier against Slovenian outfit, Domzale, after a 1-1 draw away from home during the week.
Marseille finished in a disappointing fifth place at the end of last season, although they did hold a very impressive home record of 13-4-2 33/13 to their name, and more of the same is expected this season.
Visitors Angers continued to defy the odds last season as they finished in a creditable mid-table position in the French top flight as they more than held their own. They did just about enough when required to keep themselves away from any relegation worries, but they’ll be keen to improve last season’s away record which finished at 5-2-12 17/32.
With the loss of a couple of key personnel during the summer (N’doye to Birmingham City and Diedhiou to Bristol City), it’ll be interesting to see if they have the depth of squad to be able to fill these holes – only time will tell.
In their last visit to the Stade Vélodrome, angers were soundly beaten 3-0 by Marseille, and although it may be a closer contest this time, I’m expecting Marseille to run out winners again.
