Both Marseille and Lyon have ambitions of playing in European football next season but have work to do in their remaining three matches to ensure they achieve that, starting with this massive clash on Sunday evening at the Stade Veledrome.

Having managed to pick up only one point from their last two games, Marseille have had to lower their sights in terms of European football. Rudi Garcia’s team had been building towards a top three finish and qualification for the Champions League but defeat at home to Nantes followed by a draw with Strasbourg last week has seen them slip eight points behind Lyon who currently sit in third spot. Of course, a win at home to that opponent on Sunday would see them close it to five points with a couple of games still to play but you have to think that, realistically, they are now looking towards the Europa League at the very best and know that in order to achieve it they will have to win their final three games and hope that St Etienne falter in order to close the seven point gap. It’s a tough ask and Garcia will be frustrated with his team’s recent results as it has really stalled the progress, they were making in the second half of the season. It’s now just two wins in their last seven games and should they fail to be playing in Europe in the next campaign they will look back to this period of the season with regret. Garcia is already planning for what’s ahead in terms of potential signing targets, but this current squad still have a job to do and it continues on Sunday.

Lyon Preview

One thing is certain for Lyon and that is Bruno Genesio will not be in charge of the club beyond the end of this season. Other than that, everything else is very much up in the air and that includes which European competition they will be playing in in 2019/20. Lyon hold a narrow lead in third spot heading into their clash with Marseille on Sunday and it’s almost certain that they will finish no higher than their current position which would see them enter Champions League qualification. That is the absolute minimum that Lyon would have been hoping for at the beginning of this season and because of that is why Genesio is on the hunt for new employment. There’s no doubt that the club have underachieved this year but it’s all about trying to get third place secured now and look forward to new beginnings. Their recent form in the league has been decent enough with five wins and just one defeat in their last nine games, but they know they’ll be in for a huge challenge on Sunday as they try to stretch the gap between themselves and St Etienne (in fourth) to four points.

Both Marseille and Lyon are two clubs with ambitious owners and whilst they are pragmatic enough to realise how far ahead PSG are in France, they know they should be fairing better than what their respective seasons have produced so far. The hosts’ hopes of playing in Europe next season have been hit hard by results in recent weeks, but this is a big occasion and one they know they need to prevail in whilst Lyon are looking to take advantage of St Etienne’s loss on Friday night.

The visitors’ away form has been decent without being much else but they have managed two wins in their last three games and another would see them within touching distance of securing third place – so the stakes are high. In terms of average goals per game, these teams are fourth and second so it bodes well that we’ll see an open game. In 16 of the last 23 meetings between the two both teams have found the net and that looks to be the way to go for Sunday’s game, too.
