Marseille come into their first leg semi-final of the Europa League against Austrian side Salzburg on the back of three wins on the trot in all competitions, as the French hosts look to gain an early advantage at their Stade Vélodrome.
Recent wins over RB Leipzig 5-2 in the Europa League, followed by back-to-back wins in Ligue 1 over Troyes 3-2 and Lille 5-1 have given Marseille a timely boost ahead of this crucial two-legged affair, and tonight’s hosts have hit a purple patch on home turf in the Europa League in recent times.
The French outfit have won seven of their last eight on home turf and this sequence also includes four clean sheets, while scoring a healthy 21 goals in the process. This is perhaps no surprise as goals have been produced from numerous personnel so far this season including Thauvin (19 goals), Ocampos (9 goals), Sanson and Mitroglou (8 goals apiece), amongst others!
Red Bull Salzburg have defied their critics as they line up amongst the last four in the Europa League having accounted for the likes of Real Sociedad, Borussia Dortmund and Lazio in the knock-out phase of the competition, and they also bring a winning streak of four matches with them to Marseille tonight.
Wins over Lazio (Europa League), Admira Wacker (Bundesliga), Mattersburg (cup) and Rheindorf Altach (Bundesliga) should provide the visitors with a confidence boost as they look to contain the French outfit in this first leg with a view to getting the job done in next week’s second leg.
Salzburg have suffered just one defeat in their last 17 matches in the Europa League overall, while the recent 4-2 defeat at Lazio is their only loss in their last nine on the road.
But as good as Salzburg have been so far, I think they’ll come a cropper at Marseille tonight.
