Marseille Preview – Can Marseille make it six straight wins to maintain their position in second?

There was a lot of attention around the appointment of Andre Villas-Boas as Marseille manager. Having been out of work since a spell in China back in 2017, the former Chelsea and Tottenham boss has been linked with a number of jobs. This was the offer which tempted him back and as we approach the end of his first six month it’s been a positive start to life in France. That may not have been the judgement a couple of months ago, however. Before stringing five straight wins together Marseille had only managed four victories in 11 games. There were a lot of draws and hardly prolific during those early weeks. It’s much more encouraging now as they sit second in Ligue 1, five points behind PSG – albeit having played a game more.

Villas-Boas will be more concerned with ensuring they maintain their three point lead over Lille who they have a game in hand over themselves. In their run of five wins building into this game Marseille have defeated Lille and Lyon. Being able to win those big games will ultimately prove crucial when it comes to who finishes in the top three and represents France in next year’s Champions League. A competition that Marseille will feel they need to be competing in regularly.

Bordeaux Preview – Unbeaten in six matches, are Bordeaux able to get all three points here and move closer to opponents?

Following a very poor campaign last season which seen Bordeaux finish well down the table, there was uncertainty as to what this year had in store. Approaching the midway point and they are on course to turn in one of their best in the last decade. Paulo Sousa took charge back in March of this year and he appears to have used the time wisely in preparing the squad for this campaign, even if results were poor at the start of his reign. Just like their opponents on Sunday Bordeaux come into the game in very good form. They’re now unbeaten in six matches, most recently beating Nimes 6-0 at home. That was the first time Bordeaux have scored six goals in a league game since 2003 which indicates just how good a place they’re in at the moment.

Challenging for the top three would probably have been seen as unrealistic at the start of the season but Sousa’s men are getting better with each game at the moment. The likes of Lyon and St Etienne are very close in behind so they know they have to maintain this form in order to remain in the hunt for the European spots.

Key-Facts – Marseille vs Bordeaux

  • It may have been a slow start for Andre Villas-Boas at Marseille but his team are in brilliant form at the moment and second in Ligue 1
  • Bordeaux have improved massively under Paulo Sousa and find themselves in fourth spot with a realistic chance of making the top three this season
  • The visitors have not won in Marseille since a 2-1 victory back in May 2008

Marseille vs Bordeaux Betting Advice

It’s a clash that brings together two Portuguese coaches who are enjoy very productive seasons at their respective clubs. Marseille are looking to establish themselves as best of the rest essentially, and a win here would again underline that as it comes against another team in the hunt for Europe. Their opponents will not make it easy and are full of confidence after their biggest wins in over 20 years.
PSG are the only visiting team to have won at the Veledrome this season. Two of the current top five were defeated here 2-1 in November and it could well be a similar sort of game on Sunday. Bordeaux have only lost two of eight away games this season and scored in all but one of those. Marseille have kept just one clean sheet in eight league games making both teams to score a solid selection.
