Preview: For Marseille, the knockouts have come early. The Ligue 1 side remain pointless through three games in Group C and will be eliminated from the tournament should they lose to FC Porto at the Stade Velodrome. A win for the Portuguese, however, would strengthen claims for a top two finish in this section.

Marseille Preview – Knockout football arrived early?

Following a 3-0 loss to Porto in Portugal, a game in which Dmitri Payet spurned a glorious opportunity from the penalty spot to restore parity with his team 1-0 down, Marseille (L3) are left bottom of Group C and in urgent need of pick me up in this reverse encounter at the Stade Velodrome. Anything less than victory for Andre Villas-Boas’ men would see them eliminated from the competition on the night.

On the evidence so far though, a win for last term’s Ligue 1 runners-up has to be considered the least likely of the three outcomes. While a slender 1-0 defeat to Olympiacos, in Greece, on Matchday 1 may have been slightly harsh on them, there were nothing dubious about the 3-0 scorelines inflicted thereafter. First by Man City, here in France, before Porto outclassed them in Portugal.

Furthermore, Marseille are the only team still to muster a goal in this season’s group stage, generating a measly 0.04 xG at home to Man City. Villas-Boas left plenty of firepower on the bench on that occasion, something he is unlikely to do here when winning is imperative. Yet, with their weekend Ligue 1 fixture with OGC Nice postponed, it will have been almost three weeks since their last competitive match.

FC Porto Preview – Portuguese side out to consolidate second?

Portuguese champions Porto (W2 L1) were dealt an early setback first time out, losing 3-1 in England to Man City, but have recovered smartly by taking the next six points, and have subsequently staked a strong claim for the second qualifying berth. Sergio Conceicao’s side sit three and six points clear, respectively, of Olympiacos and Marseille following successive home wins against the Group C pair.

Porto were three goals too good when these sides met in Portugal on Matchday 3, inside Estadio do Dragao. Promising Colombian Luis Diaz wrapping up a comfortable 3-0 success in the second half, adding to first-half contributions from Moussa Marega and Sergio Oliveira. The first in a run of three consecutive wins across all competitions, while they have now netted two or more in the last five (W4 D1).

Victory over Marseille would also maintain the club’s near-faultless record up against French opposition, having lost just one of their past eight such encounters (W6 D1 L1), winning each of the last five. Moreover, the 2003/04 Champions League winners have now suffered only one loss in their last twelve group stage matches (W9 D2 L1) – the aforementioned result with Man City the anomaly.

Marseille Vs FC Porto Betting Advice

The goals scored tally immediately stands out when glancing at the Ligue 1 standings, with Marseille‘s average of 1.33 goals per game easily ranking them the worst of those sides currently inside the league’s top ten. This has evidently carried over into Europe, where they are the only team without a goal in the Champions League group stage, having now lost each of their past twelve matches in the competition.

Marseille Vs FC Porto – Key Facts:

  • After three games during this season’s group stage, Marseille remain without a point and are the only side in the competition yet to score a goal.
  • Scoring has posed no such problem for Porto, though, with the Portuguese title holders netting in all three group games and at least twice in their last five fixtures in all competitions.
  • Across six previous head-to-head encounters, Porto have failed to win just the once – a 1-1 draw in France in 2007 – winning on two of three visits here since 2003.

Another loss for Marseille would set them apart from anyone else, as no team in history has ever lost thirteen on the spin. That is a lot of pressure coming into what is already a fixture they simply cannot afford to lose. By the same token, Porto will move a step closer to qualifying with a third victory in four group outings and, unlike their opponents, are both scoring (2.4 avg/pg in league and Europe) and winning games regularly.
