Marseille Preview – Could Sampaoli lead his players to a rare victory over rivals?
Jorge Sampaoli is realistic enough to know that Marseille and the rest of Ligue 1 are ultimately playing for second place. Of course Lille were able to provide a massive upset last season but that is the exception. The Argentine coach – who took over in March – will be happy enough with the current standings. Marseille are third in Ligue 1, 10 points behind PSG at the top but one adrift of Lens who are a place above them. They’ve also played one game less than those two clubs.
Their recent form has not be all that encouraging, though, with only one win in their last four games. That was last time out at home to Lorient in a thumping 4-1 win. They had taken just a point from the three games prior to that win, losing to both Lille and Lens.
Defeat to Lens is the only loss they’ve had at the Stade Veledrome this season. PSG are the only team to have scored more goals at home than them as well, however the seven goals conceded at home is the most of any team in the top half of the table.
Sampaoli has to be credited with rejuvenating talisman Dimitri Payet. He managed only seven goals in the whole of last season but has five in six games so far in this campaign. He will be a key player of anything that Marseille achieve this year.

For all PSG have not been in sparkling form they are still well clear of the rest of Ligue 1 and look set to comfortably regain the title they lost last season. That’s not to say there isn’t improvement to be had both domestically and in Europe. Mauricio Pochettino is still search for a formation which allows him to play his collection of stars in an effective system.
The only blot on PSG’s domestic record is a 2-0 loss away to Rennes at the beginning of this month. They have picked up victories in all their other league matches which includes wins away to Metz, Reims, Brest and Troyes.

PSG come into this game on the back of a couple of unimpressive performances at home to Angers and RB Leipzig. They were behind in both games and relied on penalties in the close stages to get the victories.
The signing of Leo Messi was met with huge excitement as you would expect but the former Barca star has barely played in Ligue 1 and is still searching for his first goal in domestic competition, he has struck twice in Europe including the winner in midweek.
