Mattersburg Preview – Poor home record cause for alarm?

After playing all of their allotted 22 fixtures during the regular season, of which they managed only five wins, Mattersburg (11th – W5 D3 L14) begin the second phase of the 2019/20 Austrian Bundesliga once again competing in the Relegation Round – as was the case in 2018/19 where they would excel, in fairness to them, finishing above five of the six teams in this section.

The club, which has competed in the country’s highest division for nearly two decades without succumbing to relegation, will therefore hope its team can raise their level for the remainder of the campaign in a similar manner to last season. If performances before the lockdown were any sort of barometer, though, this final stretch could be nervy for those fans watching from the confines of their homes.

Bottom of the league St Poelten were the only team to have collected fewer points in the regular season than Mattersburg (18), alarmingly recording only one win at their Pappelstadion in eleven attempts (W1 D2 L8). Moreover, they’ve not won a league fixture at home since the very first week of the season, taking two out of a possible 30 points in said matches since beating Hartberg 2-1 last July.

Altach Preview – Break disrupted strong pre-Covid form?

Despite falling to a harsh loss – conceding twice in second-half stoppage time to lose 2-0 on the road at Admira – in their last match before the league was temporarily halted due to the ongoing pandemic, Altach (8th – W7 D3 L12) could well rue the unfortunate timing after taking an impressive haul of 14 points from their previous seven top flight fixtures (W4 D2 L1). Now, a second successive stint in the Relegation Round awaits.

This is nothing new, of course. Last season Altach also spent the final few months competing against those in the bottom half of the league come the end of the regular season and, like then, will expect to prove too good for more than a few of the six teams keeping them company – losing two of twelve encounters during this stage in 2018/19, neither of which coming away from home (W3 D2).

Victories away to Sturm Graz and St Poelten and a goalless draw with Tuesday’s opponents, Mattersburg, mean Altach go into their first competitive match for nearly three months unbeaten on their travels in three. This a drastic improvement on their early-season performances, which were hopeless putting it mildly, when winning three and losing eleven of their opening 15 encounters.

Mattersburg Vs Altach Betting Advice

Both would come into their own during last season’s Relegation Round. The enforced break has certainly played into Mattersburg‘s hands more, though, as they were struggling at the time having just lost back-to-back matches. By contrast, Altach had suffered just one loss in their last seven (W4 D2 L1) to surge up the standings.

Mattersburg Vs Altach Key Facts

  • No team in Austria’s top tier this season has recorded fewer wins (1) or points (5) at home than Mattersburg.
  • Altach are among three sides who have taken 10 points from 11 away matches so far – only Austria Wien, meanwhile, have collected fewer (9).
  • Tuesday’s encounter will mark the third between these two teams of 2019/20, with Mattersburg enjoying the better of things so far with a 2-0 away win and a 0-0 home draw.

Based on their form pre-lockdown, the visitors – who did go the entirety of 2018/19’s Relegation Round unbeaten on the road – are worth supporting, despite a somewhat mediocre away record this term of W3 D1 L7. Especially as no team has taken fewer points (5 from 33) from home games this season than Mattersburg.
