Mechelen Preview – Can Mechelen get off to good start?
Mechelen achieved a top eight finish in last season’s Belgian top flight campaign and thus progressed to the Europa Conference League play-off group but this ended in disappointment as the hosts finished bottom of the four-team group, dashing any hopes of European football this season.
However, Mechelen finished last term in reasonable form as the hosts lost just one of their final eight matches of the season which was on the final day of the group games, losing 2-1 at home to Gent, but they’d also picked up five wins during this period as well.

Although Antwerp finished in 2nd place behind the title-winners, Club Brugge, Antwerp were some 16 points off the pace of the league leaders heading into the Championship Round where their season came undone following some ordinary results.
Antwerp managed to win just one of their six matches in the Championship Round and that wasn’t until the final match of the season when they recorded a 1-0 home win over Anderlecht but three defeats in their preceding five games put paid to any hopes of European football.
Results away from home were also pretty ordinary as Antwerp managed to pick up just two wins on the road from their last seven matches on their travels and lost their last two away matches on the trot with defeats at Club Brugge and Genk.
