Melbourne City Preview – Will City continue their excellent home form to stay on top?

An agonising defeat in last season’s Grand Final to Sydney FC prevented Melbourne City from winning their first A-League title. There was an immediate change of coach with Patrick Kisnorbo taking charge of the club he served as a player for three years. There has been no let-up in terms of their regular season performance as City sit top of the table with a one point lead over old foes Sydney and Central Coast Mariners.

Whilst finishing top would be welcome, it’s clearly about going all the way and ensuring they bring the title home for the first time. There recent form will give them confidence they can do just that.

City have won eight of their last 11 matches including a six-match winning run which seen them beat the current champions. They’ve also thumped their city rivals Victory 7-0 – that win coming in their most recent home game.

Kisnorbo will be well aware of the significance of winning the regular season as it brings with it home advantage to the final, and City’s home form has been excellent. Their seven matches so far have seen six wins with Perth Glory the only visiting team to beat them. They are the top scorers both at home and overall and have the joint best defensive record at home.

Newcastle Jets Preview – Can the Jets cause a huge upset and make it a double over their opponents this season?

As encouraging a season as it’s been for their opponents thus far, it’s been the complete opposite for Newcastle Jets. They find themselves in bottom spot and without a win in their last 10. The Jets lost their first four games of the campaign but did recover, going unbeaten in their next five – winning four of them. That’s as good as it’s got, however.

Their last 10 games have seen them pick up just two points following draws with Perth Glory and Macarthur. Instead of a push for the playoffs in their remaining games, coach Craig Deans will be tasked with attempting to lead his team off bottom spot and end this hapless run.

The biggest issue for the Jets has been their form in front of goal. A return of 16 goals is the lowest in the league and an area where they will have to seriously improve in the remaining weeks.

To highlight just how poor they have been in attack, the 2-1 win over Wellington Phoenix back in January is the only time Newcastle Jets have scored more than a goal in any one league match so far this season.

Melbourne City vs Newcastle Jets Betting Advice

The fact Melbourne City find themselves top despite having played three games more on their travels is testament to how good they have been so far this season. Their home form is excellent and it’s no surprise to see them big favourites to make it six straight wins in front of their home fans.

It’s been a toil for Newcastle all season but especially of late. They’ve lost four of their last five on the road and won just two of their 10 away games all season.

Key Facts – Melbourne City vs Newcastle Jets Betting Tip

  • Melbourne City have won six of their seven home matches this season, scoring 22 goals in the process
  • Newcastle have taken just two points from their last 10 league games
  • It was a rare victory for the Jets when these teams met earlier in the season, winning 1-0 at home

I expect the home team to win but also for there to be goals. Six of Melbourne’s last seven at home have had at least three goals whilst Newcastle have scored in each of their last five away games. Take the home team to win and both teams to score.
