Sunday evening also brings us the final of the Gold Cup with, rather predictably, Mexico taking on USA as the betting tips continue at Soldier Field in Chicago.

Between them, Mexico and USA have won 13 of the last 14 Gold Cups, with the only other team winning it being Canada, back in 2000.

Mexico Prediction – Can Mexico claim back Gold Cup?

A sixth win on Sunday evening for Mexico would see them claim back the Gold Cup at their host’s expense, and would be an 8th time they would have won this competition.

Mexico topped a four-nation Group A that consisted of Canada, Martinique and Cuba, and they sailed through the group stages.

A 7-0 humiliation of Cuba in their opening group match was the sign of things to come as Mexico breezed to the top of the group.

Victories over Canada 3-1 and Martinique 3-2 made it three wins from three matches and a 100% winning record, along with USA and Haiti in their respective groups.

A total of 13 goals were scored by the Mexicans and they conceded just 3 in reply as their emphatic progression to the quarter-finals was confirmed.

However, in the last eight, they were pushed all the way by Costa Rica as the scores remained level at 1-1 after 90 minutes.

The Mexicans won the ensuing penalty shoot-out, but they were given a scare nonetheless, as they prepared to face Haiti in the semi-finals.

Extra-time was required to see off a spirited Haiti outfit, but it became Mexico’s ninth win on the trot in all competitions.

Mexico have beaten USA in just 5 of the last 15 meetings between these two sides.

USA Prediction – Can USA win back-to-back Gold Cups?

One of the hosts nations of this year’s Gold Cup, USA, also enjoyed complete domination of Group D as they too finished with a 100% winning record.

The hosts finished with a 3-point margin ahead of runners-up, Panama, thanks to wins over Guyana, Trinidad & Tobago and Panama.

For the record, USA recorded a 4-0 win over Guyana, 6-0 versus Trinidad & Tobago and edged out Panama in a narrow 1-0 victory.

Although slightly fewer goals were scored by the States (11 in total), they kept clean sheets in each of their three group matches on their way to qualifying for the quarter-finals.

Another clean sheet was achieved in their quarter-final clash with Curacao, which manager, Gregg Berhalter, would have been delighted with.

USA’s rock solid defensive unit was finally breached in the semi-finals when they came up against Jamaica, who had previously lost in the previous two finals.

Nevertheless, USA recorded their fifth win on the trot by a scoreline of 3-1 to progress through to this year’s final with Mexico.

USA have only won back-to-back Gold Cups just once before, when they won it back in 2005 and 2007.

Key-Facts – Mexico v USA

  • Mexico have won their last 9 matches on the trot in all competitions
  • USA have conceded just 1 goal throughout the tournament to date
  • USA and Mexico have won 5 each and 5 draws in last 15 meetings

Betting Tips Verdict

This clash couldn’t be closer as the last 15 meetings between these two sides have resulted in 5 wins apiece along with 5 draws. Mexico arguably possess the better quality but USA with home advantage are expected to be a stubborn opponent.
